2. Introduction
• A bay window is a window space projecting outwards from the main walls of a
building and forming a bay in a room
• Bay window, window formed as the exterior expression of a bay within a structure,
a bay in this context being an interior recess made by the outward projection of a
wall. The purpose of a bay window is to admit more light than would a window
flush with the wall line
• A bay window is also called an oriel, or oriel window, when it projects from an
upper story and is supported by corbels
• Introduced in Gothic domestic architecture and found in almost all styles
afterwards, they are also associated historically with mansions of the early English
Renaissance

corbel at the bottom/ a series of corbels
• On an upper floor the bay window should be load bearing
• The most common angle for bay window construction is
135 degrees nut it can also go up to 160-170 degrees
• The chajja or the shade can be sloping or flat as per the
requirements

• Use of bay window in any structure increases
its energy efficiency, by letting in more natural
light and ventilation and limiting the use of
active methods
• Bay windows help a lot in cutting down the
energy costs and consumption
• Nowadays UPVC is a material much more in
use, UPVC bay windows provide a good seal
for both sound and heat
• They are also very durable and therefore do
not become a waste in any case of demolition

undesirable. Example in hot summer days
