Editor's Notes
Good afternoon. First of all, I would like to thank the organizers of this congress, who have accepted the communication of this experience, and who have given us the opportunity for being here today. My name is Andrea and I have made this essay in collaboration with my college Francisco. We are Nursing students in the second-year at University Nursing Center Saint John of God, in Bormujos. In this presentation I would like to discuss about our proyect research, called “Semillero de Investigación José Bueno O.H.”.
Here we show our presentation order.
The research is a key to foment its development since Nursing has become an academic discipline. That is how the need to promote research is born. We must investigate to provide our profession with a theoretical basic, to improve and guide its praxis. That is highly important, for us and for the patients. Our Center has therefore carried out this initiative to form young professionals in any investigation areas from different knowledge areas and to promote research with a future perspective. The initiative start in 2014/2015 [twenty fourteen; twenty fifteen].
The Research aim. The “Semillero” was launched to fully develop our Center´s potentialities. It was also created to make the Center’s research activity visible. The Research activities are aligned with this three specific objectives: to promote Nursing research, to increase the training of future nurses in research and to evaluate the impact of learning. Currently the last aim is in process. We have some interviews to several students from our working group to evaluate this objectives.
Next I would like to turn to the objectives of this presentation, which are: to describe what is the “Semillero José Bueno O.H.” , the second is to describe who are the members of this group and the last is to describe which are the research areas.
The elaboration of this presentation has followed a descriptive methodology.
We used some questionnaires to find out the characteristics of the members in our group. We also use our work memory.
Moving on to the next section, the “Semillero” is a group of Nursing students and Nursing teachers who work together to create an extracurricular space.
In this context each student has a referent. We work face to face. One student with one teacher. In the space the group creates, the main actor is the student and each student is helped or guided by a different nursing teacher. I would like to talk about these photos. The top right was taken in 2014, when the group was created. The bottom three were taken this year, on the 11th of May, when the group organized our Third seminar of Creativity and Care. This seminar is celebrated every year, this course It is going to the fourth. On this day the members of the “Semillero” expose theirs researches. Postgraduate Nursing Students can expose too. Every year we have lectures from important people in the Nursing History and with plenary sesions. It is really interesting because many different topics are treated. Last year we listened to professor Juana María Hernández Conesa phD. I show a picture with her here, she is a relevant historian and the third Spanish Nurse who has received the Florence Nightingale Medal.
The seminar is credited with 0,4 European credit for University Student. The assistance is free for students.
You are all invited to come this year. It is going to on the 10th of May. We would love counting on your presence and even your participation.
Next I would like to turn to our research areas. One of the projects we are carrying out is a formative one, about the prevention of pressure ulcers, for caregivers. Pressure ulcers have been a recurring problem in our History, but they are preventable, and they are an important responsability of Nursing. For this reason a proposal to reduce the incidence of pressure ulcers came up. Last year, a recruitment of caregivers was carried out in the hospital. They were invited to participate on workshops on pressure ulcers. The recruitment was succesful and the participants left with practical and theoretical knowledge about pressure ulcers, really satisfied.
We are also carrying out a program of nurses intervetions to improve knowledge of COPD, a disease with high prevalence. Because of this, we intended to improve the knowledge of patients in the management of the disease by implementing a program of therapeutic education based on ICTs. Their knowledge was evaluated before and after the intervetion.
It was also carried out a program to prevent HIV AIDS in secondary school. It was executed in four different high schools of Aljarafe. This year, to celebrate the world Day of the fight against AIDS, on the 1st of december, we are going to repeat the program to raise awareness of young people in some Aljarafe high schools.
We evaluate their knowledge before and after the intervention by using a particular questioner.
A program to prevent gender-based violence between teenagers is other project. Last year it was focussed on gender-based violence executed through new technologys. Some of the program’s aims are to break sexist stereotypes, to promote healthy and egalitarian gender relations and to early detect and prevent risk factors and practices.
Humanization of care is and own line of Saint John of God, in which all our actions are based.
The last research area I want to mention is the impact of the use of ICTs on the anxiety of preoperative patients. This project confirmed that the use of ICTs reduces the anxiety of caregivers during surgery. In contradistinction to those who do not receive information by these means.
To sum up, I would like to say that the “Semillero José Bueno O.H.” through its activities brings knowledge and skills of team work and research to the student who aspires to it, as well as an early start of interest for the development of knowledge of our discipline.
Here I leave the link to our group´s blog, where more information about who we are can be found, as well as the seminars we have made, our current program and the development of our researches.
Here you have my email adress and my college. You can write us if you have any question or if you want more information about the seminar of Creativity and Care.
Before concluding, I would like to read something Florence Nightingale said: let us never consider ourselves finished nurses… we must be learning all of our lives.
Thanks for your attention, if there are any questions, I would be happy to answer them.
