Heart an important organ plays an important role in the maintenance of homeostasis and at the same time it is vulnerable to many risks. The present topic focuses on the management of heart and the risks involved in its mismanagement.
2. ο The word cardiovascular is derived from two
terms(cardio-heart; vascular- blood vessels).
ο It is divided into two parts mainly heart and the
blood vessels.
ο The pumping action of heart ensures continuous
circulation of blood.
ο The blood vessels form a lengthy network through
which the blood flows.
3. ο The pumping of blood takes place in two different
ways: Pulmonary and systemic circulation.
ο The right side of heart pumps blood into the lungs
where it gets purified(oxygenated) due to gaseous
exchange.
ο This oxygenated blood returns to the left atria of heart
by pulmonary veins completing pulmonary circulation.
ο This oxygenated blood now is transported to the
respective cells and tissues by aorta which is called
systemic circulation.
4. ο Human heart is a cone shaped hollow muscular
organ .
ο It is located in the middle of the thoracic cavity in
between the lungs just behind the sternum.
ο It weighs about 250-350 gm in males and 200-300
gm in females.
ο The heart remains covered by a double membrane
bound muscular coat called pericardium.
