1. Release The Hounds Storyboard
• No voice over
• Pre recorded
• Fast paced, a total of 10 seconds
• Horror Themed Game Show
• This opening sequence sets the tone for the game show. Due to the lack of information provided in
this opening sequence it leaves the audience with a sense of enigma as the only thing that they
know and can see is the title. No indication is given towards the presenter or the contestants which
will be participating in the episode. Through the dimly lit scene which acts as an introduction to the
game show it leaves the audience with a sense of eeriness as this reflects on the actual location of
the show, in a forest. So this is an accurate depiction of the setting of this game show.
2. This sets the scene and in the distance a gate/ barbed fence can be seen.
The dark and eerie forest sets the tone and the setting for the rest of the show. Blue and black are used
which contributes to the melancholy atmosphere.
This frame is shown for about 2 seconds, the camera shakes as if running, this allows a zoomed shot to be
shown as if the contestants were running away. This allows it to get closer/ more zoomed in for the
second frame.
Music is used to build up tension, it remains consistent in this frame, sounds spooky as it’s meant to
frighten the audience. No words/ lyrics are used.
Quite dimly lit, creates a frightening atmosphere, it also allows the silhouettes of the trees to stand out.
3. The title of the show is displayed here. As it’s called Release The Hounds it doesn’t create an enigma for
the audience as they would be already aware that dogs are involved but they don’t know how or why. The
title not only causes tension and suspense but it leaves the audience wondering if something will happen
to the contestants. Also as the font is all in capitals it creates a tense atmosphere and a sense of danger is
conveyed through the sign. The colours that are used for the sign are red, which is a primary colour and
it’s normally affiliated with danger and white which connotes purity and innocence which could suggest
that the contestants on this show have never done anything like this before.
Quite dimly lit, creates a frightening atmosphere, it also allows the silhouettes of the trees to stand out,
which can still be seen in this frame.
This frame is shown for about 2-5 seconds, the camera in this shot doesn’t zoom in too much.
The Music starts to speed up for a dramatic effect, more tension is built as more instruments are added
throughout this part, it still remains eerie and mysterious.
4. The Dog is in the O but it appears to look like a moon and as the dog can be heard howling, it conveys that
this show compares this dog to be as vicious as the supernatural creature of a werewolf, as it’s a known
animal it’s qualities will be known too. This highlights the fact that anything can happen in this show.
This frame is shown for about 5-10 seconds then it zooms in on the dog howling on the sign, this reiterates
what the show involves.
The tone of the music changes completely to short and fast, this could mimic footsteps and the speed
needed to run away.
When zoomed in on the dog an added sound effect can be heard of dog’s howling, then when it zooms in
to see the red background behind the sign dog’s barking are heard. Only a low background hum of the
original theme song can be heard until the very end, then the reoccurring sound that’s played throughout
the show is faintly heard before the frame ends.
5. The Chase Storyboard
• Slow pace but the music adds and builds tension and action. In total it’s about 23
seconds.
• Voice Over.
• Introduction isn’t pre-recorded but the opening sequence is, as it’s done on the
computer/ it’s animated.
• This opening sequence sets the tone for the game show. The audience are introduced to
the presenter and the contestants in the episode that they’re watching, the only thing
which they don’t find out in the opening sequence is what chaser they will be playing
against. This is a longer opening sequence than Release The Hounds and because of this
the audience is able to obtain as much information as possible, leaving the only enigma to
be the chaser. Through the brightly lit studio and the positioning of the contestants
(sitting at a panel) it conveys the intellectual nature of the show.
• Game Show, Quiz
6. This frame allows the audience to meet the contestants. They’re seated behind a table with
their names on it, this follows one of the conventions of game shows. A traditional studio
setting.
The camera slowly zooms onto their faces, but not individually.
The frame lasts for about 7 seconds.
In this frame it gives the audience an introduction to the colour scheme: blue, white and red,
which two of them are primary colours.
Music: upbeat, lively, quite fast paced. No words/lyrics included.
Voice over: Bradley Walsh states the aim of the show, to win thousands of pounds. He also
addresses the number of contestants there are and the fact that they don’t know each other
and they’ve never met before.
7. The transition from the previous scene to this one is cut.
When Bradley Walsh talks the camera slowly zooms in on him, becomes a short close up
This frame lasts for about 3 seconds. The studio is quite brightly lit, with backgrounds that
feature darker colours, this makes the studio to appear slightly dimer than it actually is.
The first impression that the audience get from Bradley Walsh is that he’s: funny but serious
and as he’s quite casually dressed it’s evident that he has a laid back demeanour.
Music: upbeat, lively, quite fast paced.
Voice Over: informs the audience that there’s only one thing standing in the contestants way,
this creates an element of suspense and an enigma for the audience.
8. This frame is taken from a long shot, the camera pans out to reveal a silhouette of the
chaser, this creates an enigma for the audience as they aren’t aware of which one it will be.
This frame allows the audience to preview the studio before the show starts.
This frame lasts for about 2 seconds.
Music: Slightly changes from the usual upbeat, lively and quite fast paced tone.
Voice over: Bradley Walsh says the words, The chaser. The audience become aware of the
opponent that the contestants will have to face through his speech.
9. This scene then cuts back to Bradley Walsh and is shot from a close up perspective.
This frame lasts for about 3 seconds before it cuts to the pre-recorded material.
Music: The volume increases and so does the overall tone.
Voice Over: Bradley Walsh says the words, the chase is on. This phrase informs the audience as
to what happens next.
10. The opening sequence is quite long and for the duration of the opening titles, it starts to explain
the name behind the show, The Chase.
From the frame where this screenshot was taken you can see a person running, this creates an
element of suspense and as the game is explained partially through the sequence it becomes
clearer as to why it’s called The Chase.
Colours: Red and Gold. Red is a primary colour and it’s used throughout the studio as well.
This frame last for about 2 seconds then it cuts to the next frame.
Music: Slower version of the music but it still features some of the elements that the music had
before.
11. This shot reveals the chaser, but to the audience at the moment, the silhouette looks
quite eerie and mysterious. They also don’t know which chaser it will be yet.
This frame lasts for about 1 second, during which the camera is angled from afar,
during the lasts frame of this shot, the chaser’s eyes start to glow.
Music: the music remains consistent to the previous frame but clapping can be heard.
12. In this shot you can begin to see the logo/title of the game show.
The person who was running away earlier on in the opening sequence appears to be
running through the logo.
This frame lasts for about 1 second.
Music: the music remains consistent to the previous frame and clapping can be heard.
13. Then it cuts to reveal the shadow of the chaser.
The frame lasts for about 1 second.
Music: the music remains consistent to the previous frame and clapping can be heard.
14. Before this more people are shown running through the logo, this displays the amount of
contestants there will be and also the chaser’s hand is seen.
Then it cuts to this frame where the chaser is shown and then it makes the next step appear
like he is going to start chasing them.
This frame lasts for about 2 seconds.
Music: the music remains consistent to the previous frame and clapping can be heard.
15. Then the camera pans out and reveals the title of the game show, The Chase, along with the
chaser.
Colours: black, white, gold, red. Black and White are opposite colours, this could hint/
contribute towards the contrasting nature of the show. Red is also a primary colour. The font
that The Chase is written is easily legible and as it’s in capital letters it captures the audience’s
attention.
This frame lasts for about ½ a second and it’s the last one shown before the game show
begins.
Music: the music remains consistent to the previous frame and clapping can be heard.
