Aim Cesaire
 Full name Aime Fernand David Cesaire
 Born 26 June 1913 died on 17 April 2008.
 Francophone and French poet , author and
politician from the region of Martinique
 He wrote discourse on colonialism, a denunciation
of European colonial recism decadence and
hypocrisy.
 Writing style reflect his passion for civic and social
engagement.
 In 1969 he published first version of une tempete. A
redical adaptation of Shakespeare’s play the Tempest
for a black audience .
William Shakespeare
Born 24 April 1564 and died on 23
April in 1616.
 English poet, playwright, and actor,
greatest writer in English Literature
 Shakespeare produced most of his
known works between 1589 and 1613 .
His early plays were primarily comedies
and histories and are regarded as
some of the best work produced in
these genres.
A Tempest by Aime Cesaire 1969
 It is an adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest
from a post colonial perspective ‘s this post colonial
re working of Shakespeare’s original play “the
Tempest”.
 Aime Cesaire developed the negritude movement
which raises the question of French colonial rule and
restores the cultural identity of blacks in the African
Diaspora.
 The play was first performed at the festival of
hammament in Tunisia under the direction of Jean
Marie serreau. It later played in Avignon and Paris .
 In 1985 the play was translated into English by
Richard Miller in new York.
The Tempest : William Shakespeare
 Written in 1610 – 1611 , and thought to
be one of the last plays that
Shakespeare wrote alone .
 The Tempest is listed in the first folio
as the first of Shakespeare’s comedies .
It deals with both tragic and comic
themes , and modern criticism has
created a category of romance for this
and others of Shakespeare’s late plays
.
How we can compare Shakespeare’s The
Tempest with Aime Cesaire ‘s A Tempest
 In ‘The Tempest’ calibian never tries to
challenges prospero , he used his
language.
 In A Tempest calibian tries to challenges to
prospero by sing the native word “Uhuru”.
 There is not much difference between
Shakespeare’s the Tempest and aime
cesaire’s A Tempest. But ‘A Tempest’
presents colonial aspect and mentality of
master slave relationship.
A Tempest
 It is really a post colonial response to the Tempest
 As such deal with the story from the point of view of
calibian and ariel .
 This adaptation for a black theatre follows the main lines of
Shakespeare’s plot . But there are significant changes .
 The translation simplifies and shortens the original.
 Ariel and Caliban argue about modes of resistance . Ariel
pleads for non – violence.
 Where Ariel , a mullatto , slave , attempts to win over his
master and Caliban speaks outright and demands .
The Tempest
 He is the protagonist and central character.
 Father of Miranda , master of arial and Caliban
 Mediterranean island
 Twelves years ago prospero lost the dukedom of Milan to his scheming
brother Antonio.
 Was put out to sea with his 3 years daughter.
 They live on an isolated island.
 Two slaves the spirit arial and the calibian.
 Using his magic power
 Prospero causes the ship in which Antonio is traveling with the king of
neples and his son to be wretched on the island.
Conclusion
 In Shakespeare’s The Tempest prospero leaves at the end ,
but in cesaire’s ‘A Tempest’, Calibian and prospero lives there ,
at the end prospero grants Ariel his freedom , but retains
control of that island and of calibian.
 Cesaire’s version of this play explores the original concepts in
further depth in incorporating the themes of colonialism and
negritude which Cesaire studied extensively.
 “A Tempest” addresses Modernist issues and theories through
the utilisation of a classic paly that most modern Readers are
familiar with.
