ILLITERATE RATE
INTRODUCTION
Illiteracy rate
This refers to the average total number of adult people aged 15 years and above who are
unable to read and write, or simply the actual or perceived state of being uneducated or
insufficiently educated.
The main cause of this social problem is poverty, gender discrimination, technological barrier
having parents with little schooling or no schooling at all.
FINDINGS
IN WORLD WIDE.
Global literacy of the world population older than 15 years 86% are literate and
14% are illiterate. Over 65 years the global literacy rate increased by 4% every 5years -
from 42% in 1960 to 86% in 2015. (UNESCO report 2016).
Despite large improvements in the expansion of basic education, and the
continuous reduction of education inequalities, they substantial challenges ahead. The
poorest countries in the world where basic education is most likely to be binding
constraint for development, still have very large segments of population who are
illiterate.
Consider the graph which shows the illiteracy and literacy rate below,
 From the graph above it shows that the literate in world population increase and
illiterate decrease, due to the fact that countries emphasize the education to their
people in order to solve the various problems which around such as to protect against
hazards or diseases example COVID -19, through reading the leaflets and posters.
 Example Andorra is among the country which attain 100% of the people who are able to
read and write.
IN AFRICA
In 2019 the illiteracy rate among adults aged 15years and older was 34.7% in sub-Sahara
Africa. Examples of countries which have high illiteracy rate are Niger, in this country only 19%
of individuals over the age of 15 are able to read and to write, also Guinea have 30%.
Approximately 38% of adult across Africa are illiterate and these individuals roughly
66% are women due to Gender discrimination and bad traditional believes among the tribes in
Africa and remain are men.
The map below shows the illiterate rate in different countries in Africa,
 The average literacy rate in Africa is estimated to be 70% roughly, lagging behind other
continents i.e., 90%
IN TANZANIA
In 2015, adult literacy rate for United Republic of Tanzania was 77.9 % ( 22.1% are illiteracy) .
Though United Republic of Tanzania adult literacy rate fluctuated substantially in recent years,
it tended to increase through 1988 - 2015 period ending at 77.9 % in 2015.
The description is composed by our digital data assistant.
Adult (15+) literacy rate (%). Total is the percentage of the population age 15 and above who
can, with understanding, read and writes, simple statement on their everyday life. Generally,
‘literacy’ also encompasses ‘numeracy’, the ability to make simple arithmetic calculations. This
indicator is calculated by dividing the number of literates aged 15 years and over by the
corresponding age group population and multiplying the result by 100.
DATE VALUE CHANGE, %
2015 77.9 -0.27 %
2012 78.1 15.19 %
2010 67.8 -2.35 %
2002 69.4 17.45 %
Consider graph which show data of male and female who illiterate;
 The graph shows that, the 2010 have high group of people who are illiterate in all male
and female and 2012 the number of illiterates decreased due to high number of
students enrolled in private and government schools. As 2016 up to 2020 education
report in Tanzania shows the increase number of people who able to write and to read
and this project that the people of 15 years and above around 2030 are reduced in
extend.
 Female seems have low literacy rate in Tanzania because of some communities not
enroll their daughters to the school to get knowledge due to bad traditional believes and
also gender discrimination.
 In Tanzania the region which has high illiterate rate is Simiyu under report of census of
2012
RECOMMENDATIONS
 The surveys and national population censuses or household survey must present to
respondents below and above the certain age, where illiteracy reported. The question of
“can you read and write?” can not enough to justify the literacy of the individuals
because either posses or do not when in reality, literacy is a multi- dimensional skill that
exists on a continuum.
 In many cases surveys ask only one individual to report literacy on behalf of the entire
household. Hence the situation must change and start to ask person and give their truth
information.
 The gender discrimination and bad traditional believes must eradicated in the
communities in order to increase the number of people who are literacy in society and
in country at all
 The governmental and non-governmental organization required to play great role in
increase literate rate through rise awareness of important of education and through
donations and give the grants the nations for education issues such as building the
infrastructures of school and good attractive environment to the workers and students.
