Teacher Quality Standards
Standard I
Understanding of the Standard
The first teacher quality standard is the demonstration of mastery of pedagogical
expertise in the content that is being taught. For an elementary level teacher that includes
literacy, mathematics, science and social studies. Depending on the school that could also
include, the arts, physical education and world languages. All instruction that the teacher does
must be aligned with state standards and/or the common core standards. An elementary
teacher must be able to demonstrate knowledge of student literacy development in reading,
writing, listening and speaking. They must also demonstrate the understanding of student
development in mathematics including, numbers and operations, algebra, geometry,
measurement, and data analysis and probability. The teacher must be able to develop lessons
that are integrated in content areas and link students’ background knowledge and contextual
knowledge with new content.
Example of Implementation
I have currently demonstrated Standard I in a third grade classroom through the
instruction of small group reading. In these groups, students practice reading fluency and
comprehension skills. Students may be asked to compare and contrast both informational texts
and literature (stories, poems, and other fictional texts). Students must always justify their
answers to comprehension questions using textual evidence. In one lesson, students read a
non-fiction book about bats. The objective for the lesson was to teach students to collect

evidence from the text which they then used to answer a writing prompt. Students were
required to use the writing process which was previously taught to answer the prompt in a
paragraph format. To practice fluency, students sat with me during guided reading and we
practiced multiple reading strategies for fluency. For example, I might model fluency and
students would follow along with their finger. We might also choral read (read altogether), or
echo read (I would read a part of the text and then students would repeat after me). Students
could also whisper read to themselves using a phone like device to hear themselves. During this
whisper reading I would listen to students’ fluency and make corrections when appropriate.
In another set of lessons students were taught how to multiply using multiple methods.
In one lesson, students were asked to use grouping to figure out multiplication equations. For
example when multiplying 4 x 5, students drew 4 groups of 5 on a piece of paper. They would
then count the number of individual (stars, dots, etc.) parts that were drawn to get their
answer. In a second lesson students were taught repeated addition, which is another method in
practicing multiplication.
Incorporation into the Future Classroom
In my future classroomI will create math lessons that incorporate real life scenarios to
make learning relevant for students. For example, when learning multiplication as students
become more advanced they might use graph paper to design a garden or building and have to
solve the multiplication equations to find the area for each room in their building or flower bed
in their garden.
