These are the slides that I used during my presentation at the CC of Spokane eLearning Academy. Kudos to my team at Lumen for your generosity and creativity.

Open educational resources (OER) are
teaching, learning, and research resources that
reside in the public domain or have been
released under an intellectual property license
that permits their free use and re-purposing
by others.
OER include full courses, course materials, modules,
textbooks, streaming videos, tests, software, and any
other tools, materials, or techniques used to support
access to knowledge.

I’m just learning about open educationI have a good understandingI have experience with open educationI feel strong philosophical alignmentI’m pragmatic about its applicationsI’m skeptical but listeningI’m not sure what to do nextI have a vision and a plan
I have a plan for today, but I’m also willing to scrap everything to meet your needs as an audience. I’m a “vendor” with an identity problem. I can’t stop saying “We” when I talk about the SBCTC.

Much love from Lumen for all your dedication to the Next Generation Courseware grant to create Waymaker! I was honored to be selected as the institutional lead at Everett Community College to work with the Community Colleges of Spokane.
John Venn, the inventor of the diagram, describes his visual aid:
“We endeavor to employ only symmetrical figures, [that] should not only be an aid to reasoning, through the sense of sight, but should also be to some extent elegant in themselves.”
I always assume that somebody is new to the conversation, so I start with this definition.
This is old news to folks in the SBCTC system, and this citation is from 2012. Share the story about a faculty member in Maryland talking about how students weren’t buying the textbook for College Success. “They weren’t able to read the advice that would help them succeed. There’s a chapter on how to purchase your textbooks!”
Pause here to work with the 5Rs Activity with the Lumen Platform.
Mnemonics are fun! FACE—the Lumen Approach, which IMHO, is just good design and pedagogy simplified.
Note the support in the background. Everything else falls apart without support of faculty and students.
Let’s talk about the “art” of teaching here. Guiding question: What do you need to adopt OER into your pedagogy? Support? IDs? Time?
Students are at the center of what we care about as teachers. What is your ideal scenario for collaborating with your colleagues?

Customizing a College Success course makes a lot of sense. Note the example of location-specific images.
