3. Introduction
Bladeless Wind Turbine uses a radically new approach to
capturing wind energy. When wind passes one of the
cylindrical turbines, it shears off the downwind side of the cylinder
in a spinning whirlpool or vortex. That vortex then exerts force on
the cylinder, causing it to vibrate.
Vortex Bladeless is a vortex induced vibration resonant wind
generator. It harnesses wind energy from a phenomenon of
vorticity called Vortex Shedding. Basically, bladeless technology
consists of a cylinder fixed vertically with an elastic rod. The
cylinder oscillates on a wind range, which then generates electricity
through an alternator system. In other words, it is a wind turbine
which is not actually a turbine.
Vortex wind generators are more similar in features and cost-
effectiveness over time to solar panels than to regular wind
turbines.
4. History of bladeless power generation
The original idea emerged in 2002 when David
Yáñez, the inventor, saw a video of the Tacoma
Narrows Bridge disaster and led him to the idea that
there is a lot of energy contained on the physical
principle that collapsed the bridge, and it could be
harnessed as a new way of generating energy from
wind. His idea was kept in a drawer for years until
2012 when they started to look for investors and
funding to start the project.
5. Principle of working of Vertex turbine
It is based on the phenomenon of aeroelastic resonance,
harnessing energy from the wind on the emission of Von
Karman’s vortexes, a process called vortex shedding or vortex
street.
Vortex's innovation comes from its unusual shape and way of
harnessing energy by oscillation.
This way the device oscillates with a silent movement which
makes it perfect to be placed anywhere without lubricants nor
disturbing wildlife.
We are developing an environmentally friendly wind generator
which needs no blades nor rotation. It is a new technology
designed for modular on-site energy generation and low-
consumption systems off-grid, specially thought to work along
with other Vortex units or regular solar panels.
This technology under development is more similar in features to
solar power than to regular wind power, designed for self-
production and distributed energy off the grid on low
consumption systems.
6. Construction
1.Mast:-Light circular section –wind Breaker
Fiber glass- carbon fiber
Wind breaker- Oscillatory motion
2. Rod:- Carbon Fiber
Strength & Flexibility
Minimizing energy dissipation
3. Generation System:- Alternator
Series of Motor
4. Foundation:- Reduced significantly
Because of Vortex’s lightness
7. Bladeless wind devices
1. Vortex Nano:- 1 meter high and 3W nominal power
output. Designed mainly to bring energy to off-grid
locations for low consumption systems, working along
with solar panels. Stage: pre-production of a first beta
series
2. Vortex Tacoma:- 2.75 meters high and 100W nominal
power output. Designed mainly for small-scale
residential/rural wind power self-generation, working
along with solar panels. Stage: prototype, under
development
3. Vortex Atlantis/Grand:- Projected but not under
development yet. Between 9-13 meters high and around
1kW nominal power output. Designed for residential/rural
self-generation and complimentary installation to solar PV
over buildings/factories
8. Advantages
Weight 80% less than the blade
turbine.
No gear and bearings, reduces
manufacturing and maintenance cost.
No lubricant needed, noise less, more
environmental friendly.
It is frictionless.
Less space required.
Easy to assemble, Cost of energy
production is 40% less than the
conventional turbines.
Birds can fly around the mill without
fear of being sucked in.
9. Disadvantages
The efficiency of the energy absorb from the wind is comparatively less than that of the
conventional wind turbine.
Low starting torque.
The output power depend on the height of the mast.
11. Conclusion
When it comes to clean energy, wind power is considered one of the most
reliable and sustainable alternatives. In summary, the generation of
electricity is made possible by the small structure of bladeless turbine. High
efficient power is generated. This technology will satisfy the need of
continuous generation of electricity. The overall project uses less space area
hence highly economical for the rural electrification of India.
