Ganoderma lucidum and cordyceps are medicinal mushrooms used in traditional Chinese medicine to boost immunity and health. Maitake, shiitake, and oyster mushrooms may help lower cholesterol and blood pressure, and strengthen the immune system. Research also indicates these mushrooms may help prevent or treat cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and common illnesses. Other medicinal mushrooms discussed include Agaricus, Phellinus, Tremella, Hericium, and Flammulina species which are used for benefits such as preventing blindness, treating tumors, anti-aging effects, and brain health.

one of the most effective medicines
for all illness.
Due to its anti-aging and cure-all
properties, cordyceps sinensis has
been gained the position of most

endurance and stamina, and is
frequently used by world class
athletes for this purpose.
It is safe to take daily on a long

8. Maitake-Grifola frondosa
Used in traditional Asian
medicine for immune
function enhancement,
consumption of the mushroom
was thought to prevent high
blood pressure and cancer.
There is currently a study being
conducted at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center
on the use of Maitake for breast cancer patients.
9. Maitake-Grifola frondosa
In traditional Chinese medicine
it has been used for improving
spleen and stomach ailments,
calming nerves and treating haemorrhoids (Hobbs, 1995).
Recent studies have shown that polysaccharides and
polysaccharide-protein complexes from this mushroom have
significant anti-cancer activity (Hishida et al., 1988, Kurashige
et al., 1997). A limited number of clinical studies in Japan and
the USA have shown that a purified fraction of polysaccharide
is highly effective against cancers of the breast, lung, liver,
prostate and brain.
10. Maitake-Grifola frondosa
Beta glucans fractions from this
mushroom are now being used for
the prevention and treatment of
Flu and common infection
AIDS (HIV)
Diabetes mellitus
Hypertension
Hypercholesterolemia
Urinary tract infections (particularly for women)
Capsules with dried Maitake form widely accepted dietary
supplements are now being extensively marketed in US and in
Europe. Other examples are Maitake tea, whole Maitake
powder and a Maitake drink.
11. Shiitake, Lentinus edodes
It is used medicinally for diseases
involving depressed immune
function-including cancer, AIDS,
environmental allergies, and frequent
flu and colds.
Shiitake is also beneficial for soothing bronchial inflammation
and regulating urine incontinence (Bo and Yun-sun, 1980), as
well as for reducing chronic high cholesterol.
12. Shiitake, Lentinus edodes
Research has already showed
the benefits of shiitake
mushroom in lowering cholesterol.
Research conducted in Japan
identified a specific amino acid
in shiitake that helps speed up the
processing of cholesterol in the liver.
In a 1974 study on 40 elderly and
420 young women consumed 9 gram
of dried shiitake every day for 7 days.
After a week, total cholesterol levels had dropped 7 to 15% in
the older and 6 to 12% in the young women.
13. Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus species)
Species of the genus Pleurotus are excellent producers of
lovastatin and as such, Pleurotus could be considered as a
functional food with natural cholesterol-lowering ability
(Gunde-Cimerman, 1999).
Oyster mushroom lowes cholesterol and triglycerol levels as
well as very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) in blood plasma.
They have also been shown to have activity in anti-tumor,
immune response, anti-inflammatory, antiviral and
antibacterial.
They are replete with assorted vitamins such as vitamin C (30-
44mg/100grams), and vitamin B (100mg/100grams) and
niacin.
14. Oyster Mushroom (Pleurotus species)
Traditionally, it has been used to
strengthen veins and relax tendons.
In China oyster mushroom is indicated for joint and muscle
relaxation (Yang & Jong, 1989).
A product containing oyster mushroom, called "Tendon-easing
powder," is effective in the treatment of lumbago, numbed
limbs, tendon and blood vessel discomfort.
15. Some other Medicinal Mushrooms
