3. GENRE
The genre of our film is a love story. This means we can develop the
romance between two people to grab the attention of peoples emotive
side.
We are going to base ‘love at war’ on a couples eternal love that have
distance difficulties. They are separated for years yet their love stays
forever, until they meet again…
4. SETTING
• The film is set during the 1920s to the 1980s. This allows us to tell a
story throughout their life and show how they develop as people.
• During this time England was very minimalistic so had basic necessities
for example no mobile phones or TVs. This making communication
between long distance very hard.
The two main character Mike Andrews and Joan bell grew up as
neighbours in small village. Their friendship bloomed and when they hit
their teens a relationship became enviable…
5. FILMS RELATED
This sweeping
drama, based on
real historical
events, follows
American boyhood
friends Rafe
McCawley (Ben
Affleck) and Danny
Walker (Josh
Hartnett) as they
enter World War II
as pilots.
This sweeping English
drama, based on the
book by Ian McEwan,
follows the lives of
young lovers Cecilia
Tallis (Keira Knightley)
and Robbie Turner
(James McAvoy).
These films give clear indications towards the
problems couples have when a war is involved into
their lives.
6. OUR AUDIENCE
• We are aiming to appeal to over 50s as we feel that they do no have
enough films they have the chance to be enticed into. We have done so
by setting the film in a historical time era. This then has something they
can either relate too or be interested in.
Many people over the age of 50 would have had their parents be in the
war. Evacuation, being on the front line and having to hide in bunkers is
one of the many things they would have become accustomed too. In the
film, we will include these so that the audience can emphasis with the
actors emotions they portray.
7. ACTORS
• Liam Hemsworth – mike Andrews
• Amanda Seyfried – Joan Bell
- Child actors to be found ( must be a look alike)
• Jennifer Lawrence – Joan's best friend Lizzie/Elizabeth
There are no more main actors seen throughout the film therefore they will be talented
aspiring actors to fill in the extras e.g the army
8. LOCATION
• As we wanted a country setting we researched and found a place called Hereford,
Creden Hill on the outskirts of wales. This lush country side will be a great place for the
two children to become great friends and even develop their love for one another as a
couple.
• During the film life of the front line is a main place where all of the action scenes take
place. Therefore we are planning to set those scenes in France on the front line. By it
representing a place that actually had trouble in the war the audience will be able to
see what it was really like and they know it was based on a true event, making the film
more realistic.
9. COSTUME & MAKEUP
• Everyone's costume is going to represent the time era that the film is set in. this will
add emphasis onto the setting of the film as the audience are able to understand what
time the setting is just through the clothing. Makeup in those days wasn’t a necessity.
Basic makeup and effects on skin will be used to portray the older ages of the actors
and give the aging effect.
10. REPRESENTATION
• We have chosen to introduce stereotypes of the strong independent
woman of the world war to bring emphasis on women power. This
makes sure the things women did for their homes and families is
highlighted as an important mark on history.
• The main character Joan Bell, could also be considered a countertype as
unlike the other women of the war she choses to make her own path
and not wait around for a man who was unknown whether to be dead
or alive
11. DISTINCT
• Setting: the setting for the film “love at war” is set between 1920- 1960. between this time a war happens, during this war there is a separate war
between the love of two friends who are then in love. This film is also set around London and France, as events happen in both parts also they
film is shot in both country's (set design)
• Themes: love, in this film love is a main theme because of the two main characters that the film is biased around. Love is found at a young age in
this film so it link back to the target audience because they would all remember there first love. Then love lasts throughout the whole film, so that
it creates a romance. War, another theme is war and like love war last throughout the film but there is two wars that take place in the film, a war
between country's (WW2) and a war about love, and both have an effect throughout the film to create tension and key themes for the audience
to watch out for.
• Icons: gun, one icon in the film is a gun and the gun represents war and conflict between others, so it shows violence within the film. Another icon
in the film are bombs, bombs are key icons as London was a main bombing area during the war so during the war houses were consistently being
bombed so barely anyone survives and as soon as the man gets sent home his house has been bombed and so has the girl he fell in love with so
he thought that they may be dead and this theme portrays to the audience how rough and hard it was during the second world war.
• Narrative: the narrative of the film is the war that happens in love and how in-between the love of the characters is another war that is happening
world wide. It shows that love is like a war ti some people, there may be sacrifices and hard times but they can get through it like what happens in
the film as they finally meet again after there love may have been lost.
• Characters: in the film there are two main characters, Mike Andrews a man who goes off to war at the age of 18 and fights for his county, he is a
strong man who is not afraid of the war so he is a very cheery man during the war up until he remembers Joan Bell who is the lady in the film but
Mike Andrews before, during and after his injury is very sad when it comes to Joan, and the moment that the injury happens he has a flash back
to all that him and Joan have been through. Joan bell, a well organised lady who is hard working and always has a smile on her face, she is a nurse
to the injured in the war and she gets many injured soldiers come in and she always tries to help them with there issues but if the word love is
mentioned, she can only think about Mike and how there lives changed because of the war. In the future Joan cannot move on as she cannot
forget about Mike so she tries to keep smiling whenever she can.
• Textual analysis: the camera shots will vary throughout the film ‘but the cuts will be sharp and through the film there will be fast cuts before an
attack at war and slow cuts through a difficult time, the locations that will be shot at will be from one location (the man) to the other (the lady)
the editing will be differed but mainly will have slow motion when it comes to war injury's and shootings but fast on the get away and painful
scenes which will be more action but when the two characters are together it will be face shots to show the emotions behind them both. The
sound during the film is common war sounds(guns, bombs, planes and a dreaming sound when injured) also another sound is music on some
