This document provides information on various types of blowout preventer (BOP) rams and their functions. It discusses pipe rams, flexpackers, shearing blind rams, double V shear rams, variable bore rams, dual string shear rams, super shear rams, and optional wedgelocks. Pipe rams are designed to seal on specific pipe sizes and can suspend pipe during operations. Flexpackers seal around various tubing diameters. Shearing blind rams and double V shear rams both cut pipe in emergencies while sealing as blind rams normally. Variable bore rams seal various pipe and kelly sizes. Dual string shear rams cut multiple strings regardless of orientation. Super

to close and seal on
one specific size of
pipe, and are also used
for "hang-off."

The FLEXPACKER is
designed to compliment the
variable bore ram packer
range by closing and sealing
around several specific
diameters of tubing and pipe.
It fits into standard pipe ram
blocks.

Shearing blind rams (SBRs)
are dual-purpose rams that
have been proven over many
years of field service.
Under normal operating
conditions, they are used as
blind rams to seal in an open
hole. When used as a blind
ram, the blade packer in the
upper shear ram seals against
the front face of the lower
shear ram. In an emergency,
SBRs are used for shearing.

Double 'V' Shear Rams
Double 'V' shear (DVS) rams
combine the features of the SBR
and Dual String Shear Rams into
one ram. These rams are named for
the 'V' shaped cutting edge on the
upper and lower rams, a feature that
reduces required shear force by
20%, compared to standard shear
rams.

Variable Bore Rams
The Variable Bore Ram, or
VBR, seals on several sizes
of pipe or hexagonal kelly
within its specified size
range. A typical range is
from 5" to 3-1/2" diameter
Other size ranges, such as
7" to 4-1/2" diameter, are
available upon request.

Dual String (DS) Shearing Blind
Ram, also known as the DS
Shear Ram. It was originally
designed to shear larger diameter
tubulars or multiple tubing strings,
regard-less of their orientation to
the centerline of the ram bore.
With the DS Shear Ram, after the
pipe has been sheared, the lower
pipe (or "fish") is housed in a
vertical pocket. The blade face
seal provides a seal between the
horizontal faces of the upper and
lower blades.

Super Shear Rams
Using standard 3,000 psi accumulator pressure, a U BOP fitted with Super
Shear rams and Super Shear bonnets can cut through:
all standard tool joints , heavy wall drill pipe and drill,
collars up to 8" OD , casing up to 13-3/8"

Optional wedgelocks are hydraulically operated ram locking mechanisms. Wedgelocks mechanically lock and hold
the rams closed, even when operating pressure is released. The wedgelock uses a tapered wedge, which comes into
contact with the tail rod extension to prevent the piston from opening. Since the wedge piston rides against the tail
rod, it automatically adjusts for packer wear.
Wedgelocks may be added to the U BOP simply by removing the manual locking screw mechanism and bolting
on the wedgelock assembly, tailrod extension and hydraulic lines. Wedgelocks may be tested to be sure they are
in the locked position. The test procedure is identical to the standard Ram test.
