Introduction to Fluid Mechanics
Tutorial Questions
March 16, 2021 2
1. What does the word kinematics mean? Explain what the study of fluid kinematics involves.
2. Briefly discuss the difference between derivative operators d and ∂. If the derivative ∂u/∂x appears
in an equation, what does this imply about variable u?
3. What is the Lagrangian description of fluid motion? Is the Lagrangian method of fluid flow
analysis more similar to study of a system or a control volume? Explain.
4. What is the Eulerian description of fluid motion? How does it differ from the Lagrangian
description?
5. A stationary probe is placed in a fluid flow and measures pressure
and temperature as functions of time at one location in the flow
(Fig.). Is this a Lagrangian or an Eulerian measurement? Explain.
6. Define a steady flow field in the Eulerian reference frame. In such a
steady flow, is it possible for a fluid particle to experience a nonzero
acceleration?
7. List at least three other names for the material derivative, and write a
brief explanation about why each name is appropriate.
Problems 1–7 are concept questions. You are encouraged to answer them
all,

8. Consider the following steady, two-dimensional velocity field: V
̅ = (u, v) = (0.5 + 1.2x) î + (–2.0 –
1.2y) ĵ. Is there a stagnation point in this flow field? If so, where is it?
Problems 8–14 are numerical questions, and you are encouraged to answer
them all
The flow is steady and incompressible. 2 The flow is two-dimensional, implying no z-component of
velocity and no variation of u or v with z. Since V
̅ is a vector, all its components, u and v must equal
zero in order for V
̅ itself to be zero. Thus, setting u and then v equal to zero,

a converging duct (Fig.). A simple approximate velocity field
for this flow is;
