2. Poienile Izei is located in the heart of
historic Maramureș, where the old costumes
blend perfectly with the purity of nature.
Between the mountains and the forests of
Maramureș, in a real corner of heaven, lies
Poienile Izei, the place where you have the
opportunity to experience the country life in
the purest possible way. The hospitality of the
inhabitants of Poienile Izei will enchant you,
the specific relief giving the visitor a sense of
place anchored in the traditions and lifestyle
of centuries old.

3. Geographically, the administrative territory of the Poienile Izei commune lies
in the western part of the Maramureş depression, at its contact with the volcanic
mountain range Oaş - Gutâi - Ţibleş, at an average altitude of 600 m. The area
belongs to the basin of the Iza river. The currents that cross the administrative
territory of the commune are characterized by fast water with rich streams, the
main courses being the valleys of the village and Poderei.

4. Tourist spot
The most important tourist attraction in
Poienile Izei is the wooden church, which was
included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
It is one of the oldest wooden religious places
in the whole area of ​​Maramures - it was built in
1632, being dedicated to Saint Parascheva. It is
a church that does not impress in size, being
very small: the nave is five meters wide.

5. However, the wooden church in Poienile Izei stands out through
painting. By far, the most impressive part of the painting in the church
is the scene of the Second Judgment, unfolded in the west and north of
the narthex. Very interesting is the way of adaptation: sinners are eaten
by a devil who smiles, the liar is hung up in the tongue, the woman
who has deceived is raped by devils, and the abortionist is forced to eat
his baby. Representations are quite shocking, but their beauty can not
be overlooked.

6. The fact that Poienile Izei is a more isolated
village has made traditions not disturbed by modern
civilization. It is not surprising that many
Romanians, even foreigners, choose to spend their
winter holidays here in a dream setting. People
keep all the traditions they transmit from generation
to generation, embrace popular harbors and choose
to do the crafts that their ancestors did.
Nature also contributes to this landscape, and the
village is framed by a lot of fir trees. Thus, those
who reach this area will remain truly impressed
and will want to return as often as they can.
