2. Surrounded by the Bucegi Mountains and the Piatra
Craiului Mountains, Fundata's altitude of 1360 m makes it
the highest commune in Romania. Șirnea was first
attested in 1729, and Fundata in 1732. It lies on the
southern border of Brașov County, with Argeș County on
the other side, in the middle of the Rucăr-Bran Pass, along
European route E574.
It is 42 km from Brașov and 26 km from Râșnov.
In August 1916, when troops from the Romanian
Old Kingdom entered Austria-Hungary, the first
village they took was Fundata, also capturing
their first prisoners there and suffering their first
battle death.
3. A traditional lifestyle of herding sheep and cows is preserved,
augmented by tourism. Indeed, Șirnea was declared the country's first
tourist village in 1968. Aside from the mountainous scenery,
attractions in Fundata include a wooden Romanian Orthodox church
(1830) and one of stone (1939-1943); in Șirnea, there is a church from
1893-1894 as well as an ethnographic museum.
4. Traditional food
Besides beautiful landscapes, Fundata is also famous for its
traditional dishes, especially for cheese and pastrami. Here, milk also
tastes different, because pollution is at a minimum. Tourists can
indulge in dishes found in people's homes that do not use ingredients
from the supermarket.
5. Nedeia Munţilor, feast of shepherds
At Fundata, it is kept with holiness and an old pasture of the shepherds:
Nedaia Munte. It is the "successor" of the Sântilie pastoral feast held on
Mount Sântilie, located on the border of Bran with Muscel and
Dambovita. In the old documents, Nedeia appears as a "two-country fair",
Transylvania and Wallachia, and is certified as early as 1373
6. Historical monument church
If you get to Fundata, you must visit the
old church, which is now a historic
monument. It is an example of modesty
without domes and tens of meters. It is a
stone church covered with shingles. It was built in 1830 by
the priest's parish priest
Bucur Moşoiu and
painted by Ioan
Vartolomeiu, a teacher
from Şimon. The church
was perfectly preserved,
and there are two jobs
per year, on the Sâmbăta
Morţilor, and on the
Adormirea Maicii
7. Birthplace of cross-country skiing
• In Fundata was born the Romanian cross-country skiing. Here, in
1930, Princess Ileana, the daughter of Queen Maria, started to
organize skiing for children and on 23 February 1930 the first
cross-country skiing competition took place. At Fundata, everyone
knows how to ski because winter is tough and very high. In the
past, people went skiing longer because the roads were not
asphalted and there was no other transport option.
