Employment
Dec 10 to date: Transocean
Leading international offshore drilling company, operating mobile drilling units.
Dynamic Positioning Operator
I have worked as a DPO on two of Transocean’s drillships, initially spending three years on the DP3 Deepwater Millenium (a high specification, ultra deepwater drillship) operating in Ghana, Mozambique and Kenya. Since Nov 2013, I have been based on the DP3 Deepwater Asgard, (an Aker dual activity 6th generation, high specification ultra deepwater drillship), which is currently operating in Indonesia for Chevron. Accountable for the DP and VMS systems during my watch, my role is to operate DP, ballast control, power management and fire and gas systems to maintain rig stability and the correct draft and trim to ensure optimum operational efficiency. Duties include:
Dynamic positioning
 Setting up DP operational parameters; operating; advising on potential position loss; record keeping; data backup and assisting with maintenance of DP systems
 Ensuring adequate power and reserves to maintain position and operations
 Controlling the vessel using both manual and joystick controls, together with using the Data Logger to optimise DP and power plant operations, also to detect and mitigate problems
Profile
A highly experienced DPO, having spent the past four years as a DPO on DP3, high specification, ultra deepwater drillships, working for a market leading deep water operator. This was preceded by experience gained as a Second Officer and Cadet on a number of vessel types, including anchor handling; chemical and product tankers and container ships.
Attributes
 DP Hours: +6600 on Kongsberg KPOS, SDP and KCHIEF systems
 High levels of technical DPO expertise and knowledge, accompanied by strong professional ship handling and manoeuvring capabilities and a detailed understanding of power generation and engine room operations
 Good understanding of rig operations and their commercial requirements, and the ability to apply technical skills to optimise operational efficiency
 Good organisational, management and problem solving capabilities – demonstrated both in highly pressurised day to day operations and also in one off projects, such as commissioning and acceptance testing a new drillship.
 Good communications skills, enabling the establishment of positive working relationships with senior management, colleagues, crew members and external contractors
 Experienced in contributing to the creation of a highly safety aware culture in a hazardous working environment.
Principal qualifications
 STCW 95 Deck Officer, Unlimited (II/1) Certificate of Competency
 DP Unlimited Licence (Nautical Institute)
 Officer in charge of the Navigational Watch (2nd Mate), Marshall Islands
 HND in Nautical Science
Wilson, CV 2
 Running and maintaining records for hydrophones and subsea beacons
 Monitoring DP room alarms and assessing and prioritising alarm responses to maintain system operability
 Identifying, recording and reporting on system defects, bringing these to the attention of senior personnel
 Understudy the Senior DPO
Vessel operations
 Navigational watchkeeping
 Loading and sampling bulk products, also sounding ballast and bulk tanks
 Assisting senior officers with deck operations
 Operation of radios and radar
 Emergency duties, including supporting senior officers during incidents
 Assisting with rig projects where needed
 Managing deck crew undertaking deck operations
However, an important aspect of my role is health and safety management, and I am involved in the creation of a highly safety aware culture in a hazardous working environment. This includes participation in safety management meetings; communicating safety policies and practices to rig personnel; delivering safety, dire fighting and deck operations training to crew members, and accountability for planned maintenance of life saving, fire fighting and other marine equipment.
Together with a detailed technical understanding of DP systems and their operations, the post requires knowledge of thruster and power plant operation encompassing controls, operations and failure. It also demands knowledge of rig operations, including drilling and well control, also ROV and helicopter operations.
Highlights
 Member of the operations team in the shipyard in South Korea, taklng over the Deepwater Asgard and overseeing preparation for start up in Indonesia. Duties involved liaising with and supervising shipyard and technical contractors; overseeing equipment commissioning and undertaking acceptance trials for marine and DP systems. This required a detailed understanding of DP systems and theory.
 During commissioning of Deepwater Asgard wrote equipment procedures and DP related rig manuals.
 On Deepwater Millennium developed strong, technical and vessel manoeuvring skills, working in a highly pressurised environment, including full system knowledge of a number of Kongsberg and other rig systems.
Station keeping/Propulsion systems
 Deepwater Asgard: 6 x Rolls Royce 5500kw variable speed, fixed pitch, fully azimuth, underwater demountable thrusters; Kongsberg DPS-3 (KPOS and KCHIEF) rated for water depths up to 12,000 ft
 Deepwater Millennium: 6 x 5360 hp Kamewa azimuth thrusters; Kongsberg SDP and KCHIEF systems.
