Assessment is the systematic collection, review, and use of
information about educational programs undertaken for the purpose
of improving student learning and development.
Assessment:

Assessments help the teacher determine what to teach, how to teach,
and in the end, how effectively they taught it.
 Assessment affects decisions about grades, placement, advancement,
instructional needs, curriculum, and, in some cases, funding.
 Assessment inspire us to ask these hard questions:
"Are we teaching what we think we are teaching?"
"Are students learning what they are supposed to be learning?"
"Is there a way to teach the subject better, there by promoting better learning?"

What are the types of assessment?
1. Diagnostic assessment:
This assessment is used to collect data on what students already know about
the topic.
Diagnostic assessments happen at the start to gauge pre-knowledge.
• Short quizzes
• Student interview
• Classroom discussions

2. Formative assessment:
Formative assessment refers to a wide variety of methods that teachers use
to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs,
and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course.
Formative assessments are used in the middle of a lesson or year to
determine how students are progressing.

3. Interim assessment:
An interim assessment is a test administered at different intervals during
the school year to check students’ grasp on content and guide future
instruction.
Interim assessments are given across an entire school or district in order to
compare results of groups of students.

4. Summative assessment:
Summative assessments are used to evaluate student learning, skill acquisition,
and academic achievement at the conclusion of a defined instructional period—
typically at the end of a project, unit, course, semester, program, or school year.
In a summative assessment, success is measured at the end of a checkpoint.

What is the deference between an assessment and testing?
Assessment Test
Assessment is the systematic process of
documenting and using empirical data
on the knowledge, skills, attitudes and
beliefs. By taking the assessment,
teachers try to improve student learning.
A test is used to examine someone’s
knowledge of something to determine
what that person knows or has learned.
It measures the level of skill or
knowledge that has been reached.
assessment is seen as a procedure
instead of a product.
A test is a “product” that measures a
particular behavior or set of objectives.

  • 4. Assessments help the teacher determine what to teach, how to teach, and in the end, how effectively they taught it.  Assessment affects decisions about grades, placement, advancement, instructional needs, curriculum, and, in some cases, funding.  Assessment inspire us to ask these hard questions: "Are we teaching what we think we are teaching?" "Are students learning what they are supposed to be learning?" "Is there a way to teach the subject better, there by promoting better learning?" Why Assessment is Important? 4
  • 5. What are the types of assessment? 1. Diagnostic assessment: This assessment is used to collect data on what students already know about the topic. Diagnostic assessments happen at the start to gauge pre-knowledge. • Short quizzes • Student interview • Classroom discussions • Mind map 5

Formative assessment: Formative assessment refers to a wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course. Interim assessments are given across an entire school or district in order to compare results of groups of students. 7

  • 10. What is the deference between an assessment and testing? Assessment Test Assessment is the systematic process of documenting and using empirical data on the knowledge, skills, attitudes and beliefs. By taking the assessment, teachers try to improve student learning. A test is used to examine someone’s knowledge of something to determine what that person knows or has learned. It measures the level of skill or knowledge that has been reached. assessment is seen as a procedure instead of a product. A test is a “product” that measures a particular behavior or set of objectives. 10
