Session Title: Challenges in management mindset, and how to overcome them
Abstract: Deliberations in agile open space, fishbowl format.
Subjects can vary from team motivation to product management, scaled agile, agile games or anything that comes to mind
Takeaways:
Participants would get their concerns addressed, and we will experience the power of liberating structures.
2. First - Let’s pick today’s topic:
Challenges in management mindset
...And how to overcome them.
OK?
3. Would you like to try an experiment?
I’d love to try and do the first part in total silence!
Any objection?
If you have one, please raise your hand.
4. Now let’s build a backlog!
1. Think of a question you’d like answered today!
...one that will make your arrival here today totally worthwhile!
2. Alternatively: What would you like to share with the group to make your time
worthwhile? To get feedback on? To teach?
3. Only one topic per participant....
Now write it Clearly and Shortly on a card.
Remember: the card will be read by the group (in silence)
5. And now let’s prioritize our backlog!
We will do three phases of evaluation, standing up and moving in the room.
In each phase we will:
a. Read the proposed topics individually.
b. Rate them in pairs.
Here comes a clearer explanation:
6. Read the proposed topics
For 3 minutes:
- Exchange the card we have with someone.
- Read their card
- Once done, exchange the card you just read with someone else
- Etc.
And then:
7. Rate the proposals
Only when I raise my hand.
- Find a partner
- Show the card you hold to your partner
- Decide together (without speaking!) how to distribute 7 interest points
between the two cards
Example: Card A: 4 points , Card B: 3 points
(Or Card A: 0 points , Card B: 7 points)
Then - write your points at the back of the cards
(So people reading the card later won’t be influenced by the score)
4 3
8. Note: in case we are an odd number
One group will consist of three people.
This group will have 10 points to distribute between three cards.
4 3 3
10. Phase 1a: read the proposals
For 3 minutes:
- Exchange the card you have with someone.
- Read their card
- Once done, exchange the card you just read with someone else
- Etc.
11. Phase 1b: Rate the proposals
- Find a partner!
Once done - raise your hand.
4 3
12. Phase 2a: read the proposals
For 3 minutes:
- Exchange the card you have with someone.
- Read their card
- Once done, exchange the card you just read with someone else
- Etc.
13. Phase 2b: Rate the proposals
- Find a partner
- Show the card you hold to your partner
- Decide together (without speaking!) how to distribute 7 interest points
between the two cards
Then - write your points at the back of the cards
(So people reading the card later won’t be influenced by the score)
Once done - raise your hand.

16. That was Awesome!!
Now let’s do some math!
Each one of you hold a card in their hands...
- Sum up the three numbers in the back of the card,
- when done - please sit down.
17. And now, let’s play BINGO
- Anyone has 21?
- 20?
- 19?
- 18?
- 17?
- 16?
- 15?
- 14?
- 12?
- 11?
- 10?
18. And we have our backlog!
Please take a minute to think…
- Did you like the silent session?
- How would your team accept silent sessions?
Now we can exit silently and have a break!
After the break, we will treat our backlog until our time runs out.
19. Fishbowl rules:
For each topic:
1. We get an owner who sits in the fishbowl and explains the topic
2. Anyone can ask CLARIFICATION questions (and not answering the question!)
3. Once the question/ topic is clear, no one speaks outside the fishbowl.
4. Anyone who wants to respond/ ask/ suggest should sit inside.
5. There is always one empty chair.
6. If someone sits on the last chair, someone else has to leave.
7. Session ends after 10 minutes,
or when the topic-owner says they got the answer.
