Most rural settlements initially grew up based on sites that were determined by key factors like water supply, relief or terrain, soils, shelter, and defense. These sites needed to provide access to water, have suitable land for farming, offer shelter and protection, and be located in areas that were easy to defend. Rural settlements served functions like farming to produce food, mining to extract resources, tourism for recreation, and residence for people working in nearby towns and cities.
