Visual literacy is the ability to encode, or create a visual language, and the ability to decode, or understand the visual language. Decoding requires creative/critical thinking skills, as moving and still images often have a conscious and unconscious meaning
Visual encoding is the process of encoding images and visual sensory information. This means that people can convert the new information that they stored into mental pictures (Harrison, C., Semin, A.,(2009).
2. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the presentation, we should be
able to;
1. Define the concept Visual Literacy
2. Highlight the meaning of Visual Encoding
and Visual Decoding
3. State the types of Visuals used in the
classroom
3. VISUAL LITERACY
Visual literacy is the ability to encode,
or create a visual language, and
the ability to decode, or understand
the visual language correctly.
4. VISUAL LITERACY
• VISUAL ENCODING- Involves the process of
creating images and visual sensory information.
• VISUAL DECODING- Requires creative/critical
thinking skills, as moving and still images often
have a conscious and unconscious meaning.
5. VISUAL LITERACY
Hence, Visual literacy is the ability to
evaluate, apply, or create conceptual
visual representations.

Whiteboard, Overhead Projector slides,
Electronic board, Realia, Models, and so on.
16. CONCLUSION
To have an effective and efficient teaching
and learning process, Visual Literacy is very
crucial to the Lecturer / Teacher in order to
avoid poor performance.
A Teacher must know the exact types of
Visuals to be adopted for the concept or topic
to be presented.
