2. ROY INFLUENCES
& STYLISTIC
REFERENCES
• Roy is a very eclectic and even post-
modern band, mixing a lot of
different influences.
• Their dressing style is quaint and
‘middle age’, usually slacks, jumpers
or pull-overs, with mandatory orange
shirts (no particular meaning) and
slippers.
• They often fancy dress for their gigs
to, referencing many popular culture
media products.
• Their satire makes them subversive
too, challenging in a funny way
various debates and stereotypes
about ‘Englishness’. It can even be
read politically.
• They draw from the suburbia, punk,
‘80s and even Monty Python.
3. MY FINAL APPROACH – A MIXED ‘BRICOLAGE’ VIDEO
• First of all – it HAS to be bright
and funny!
• Then, it has to be FAST.
‘Lawnmower’ is an energetic
song and the video has to match
that.
• As Covid – and costs – are
preventing me from filming the
band or live action, I am going to
choose the editing-only
approach - assembling the
existing Roy photo and video
material into a
montage/bricolage video.
• The band members have also
kindly agreed to send me their
short videos captured on Zoom
or mobile.
• I will also use free material from
the internet to reflect the song
lyrics and Roy’s ‘aesthetics’.
Editing existing material from various sources into a mixed
approach video that stylistically reflects the band’s
’aesthetics’ and illustrates the song lyrics.
4. PROS & CONS OF MY CHOSEN APPROACH
PROs
• Much easier to produce given
the Covid and budget issues
• LOTS of various material I can
use for editing
• I have a top laptop and a good
mobile phone, which is all I
(plus solid and not expensive
editing software)
• I have my Dad as a ’consultant’!
• Stylistic references I’ve
as key should resonate with my
audiences
• ‘Bricolage’ allows me to be
creative and in control of the
product
CONs
• It will require more time for
editing due to number of
elements to play with
• Not sure if I will be able to learn
the editing software enough for
doing that
• Not sure whether I will be able
to make it funny
• Not sure whether I will make it
resonate with my intended
audiences, as they are quite
different
• I have a short attention span!
(Fingers crossed!)
