3. ANTIBIOTIC
Chemical produced by a microorganism that kills or
inhibits the growth of another microorganism.
ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE
The ability of bacteria and other microorganisms
to withstand an antibiotic to which they were once
sensitive.
4. CAUSES OF ANTIBIOTIC RESISTANCE
• Misuse or overuse of antibiotics
• Self-medication
• Patient forget to take medication
• Patient interrupt their treatment
• Demand for antibiotic when antibiotics are not called for
• Availability of antibiotics in some countries without
prescription
5. CAUSES(Continued)
• Failure to finish full course of medication
• Unnecessary use of antibiotics in
veterinary purpose.
• Gene transfer and multi-drug resistance
6. MECHANISMS
The four main mechanisms by which
microorganisms exhibit resistance to antibiotics
are:
Blocking entry
Drug inactivation or
modification
Alteration of target site
Efflux of antibiotic
7. BAD EFFECTS
• Increased animal and human illness, suffering and
death
• Increased cost and length of treatment
• Increased side effects from the use of multiple and
more powerful medications
• Organ transplantations,chemotherapy and surgeries
such as caesarean section become more dangerous
8. PREVENTION
• Misuse or overuse of antibiotics should be controlled
• Self-medication should be restricted
• Full course of medication should be completed
• Availability of antibiotics without prescription should be
controlled
• Antibiotics manufacturing plant should be safe
• Laboratory test should be done to ensure specific antibiotic
treatment
