KG-2
 Drillship is another type of high valued-added vessel that is
designed for exploratory offshore drilling of new oil wells.
 Building a drillship requires the use of advanced shipbuilding
and offshore drilling technologies.
 It is equipped to drill wells to 35,000 ft (10,668 m) deep in up
to 10,000 ft (3,048 m) of water.
 It’s the first of two ultra deep-water new build drill ships.
 Transocean’s drillship Dhirubhai Deep-water KG2 has
begun operations In 2010.
 The dynamically positioned, double-hulled drillship features
NOV(National Oil well Varco) drilling packages.

 Design
 Drill ships are just one way to perform various types of
drilling. This function can also be performed by semi-
submersibles, jackups, barges, or platform rigs.
 KG-2 have the functional ability of semi-submersible drilling
rigs and also have a few unique features that separate
them from all others.
 It is designed to operate at ultra deep water conditions.
 KG-2 is a Samsung 10000 double hull Drillship.
 Constructing Shipyard
 In 1998, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) became the
first Korean shipbuilder that constructed a drillship.

 Double hull- it is a ship hull design and construction method
where the bottom and sides of the ship have two complete
layers of watertight hull surface.

 Classification
 ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) : it’s a guide for
building and classing of drill ships.
 A1E : It is a classification symbol that indicates compliance
with the hull requirements of the applicable ABS Rules, and
survey by ABS during construction of the unit.
 AMS : is assigned to self-propelled vessels and offshore
units for which the machinery, boilers and systems are found
satisfactory with regard to the ABS requirements.
 CDS : Indicates that the unit’s drilling system, including the
blowout preventer, has been designed, built and maintained
to the standards contained in the ABS Guide for the
Classification of Drilling Systems.

 ACCU
 It is assigned to a self-propelled MODU.
 Having the means to control and monitor
 the propulsion machinery space from a continuously
manned centralized control and monitoring station
installed within or adjacent to the propulsion machinery
space.
 This notation may be enhanced for unattended
operation, or ACCU, indicating the means to control and
monitor the propulsion machinery space is provided from
the navigation bridge and from a centralized control and
monitoring station installed within or adjacent to the
propulsion machinery space. 7
 DLA
 DLA is assigned to vessels which have been evaluated
using an enhanced structural analysis procedure and
criteria for calculating and evaluating the behaviour of hull
structures under dynamic loading approach.
 DPS-0, DPS-1, DPS-2 or DPS-3 :
 Indicates that a unit is fitted with a system of thrusters,
positioning instruments and control systems capable of
automatically maintaining the position and heading at sea
without external aid within a specified operating envelope
under specified maximum environmental conditions.
 The assigned numeral (0, 1, 2 or 3) indicates the degree of
redundancy.

 NBL, NBLES or NIBS
 It is assigned to a unit that complies with the relevant
section of the ABS Guide for Bridge Design and
Navigational Equipment/Systems.

and ingredients that are used for the purpose

 Derrick
 A derrick is a lifting device composed
at minimum of one guyed mast.

 Hookload capacity
 The total force pulling down on the hook.
 2,000,000 lbs. static load capacity
 The steel cable (drilling line) used in draworks can be used to
hoist and lower hundreds of thousands of pounds of weight,
including lifting steel pipes out of boreholes.

 Motion Compensator
 Products that are designed to
compensate for the vertical movement of
offshore drilling rigs due to heave.

o CMC-Crown Mounted Compensator.

 The CMC is mounted on top of the
derrick crown beams.
 CMCs are used on conventional
derrick/drawwork vessels.
 NOV CMC-1000-25 with 25 ft. maximum
stroke with a staticload of 2,000 kips
(locked) and a compensated load of
1,000 kips active heave compensation.

 Rotary Table
 The revolving or spinning section of the drill floor that provides
power to turn the drillstring in a clockwise direction.
 The rotary motion and power are transmitted through the
Kelly bushing and the Kelly to the drillstring.

of 1,000 mt and 45,000 ft.-lbs. of continuous torque.

 Top drive is a
mechanical device on a
drilling rig that provides
clockwise torque to the drill
string to drill a borehole.
 It is an alternative to the
rotary table and
kelly drive.
 It is located at the swivel's
place below the traveling
block and moves vertically
up and down the derrick.

 1 x STX Cummins Marine diesel engine rated to 1,900 kW
driving 1 x Stamford PM734E1 1,350 kW at 1,800 rpm

 Liquid mud : 6,000 bbls. Active / 6,000 bbls. Reserve
 Base oils : are used to manufacture products
including lubricating greases, motor oil and metal processing
fluids. Different products require different compositions and
properties in the oil. One of the most important factors is the
liquid’s viscosity at various temperatures.

  • 4.  Design  Drill ships are just one way to perform various types of drilling. This function can also be performed by semi- submersibles, jackups, barges, or platform rigs.  KG-2 have the functional ability of semi-submersible drilling rigs and also have a few unique features that separate them from all others.  It is designed to operate at ultra deep water conditions.  KG-2 is a Samsung 10000 double hull Drillship.  Constructing Shipyard  In 1998, Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) became the first Korean shipbuilder that constructed a drillship. 4

  • 6.  Classification  ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) : it’s a guide for building and classing of drill ships.  A1E : It is a classification symbol that indicates compliance with the hull requirements of the applicable ABS Rules, and survey by ABS during construction of the unit.  AMS : is assigned to self-propelled vessels and offshore units for which the machinery, boilers and systems are found satisfactory with regard to the ABS requirements.  CDS : Indicates that the unit’s drilling system, including the blowout preventer, has been designed, built and maintained to the standards contained in the ABS Guide for the Classification of Drilling Systems. 6
  • 7.  ACCU  It is assigned to a self-propelled MODU.  Having the means to control and monitor  the propulsion machinery space from a continuously manned centralized control and monitoring station installed within or adjacent to the propulsion machinery space.  This notation may be enhanced for unattended operation, or ACCU, indicating the means to control and monitor the propulsion machinery space is provided from the navigation bridge and from a centralized control and monitoring station installed within or adjacent to the propulsion machinery space. 7
  • 8.  DLA  DLA is assigned to vessels which have been evaluated using an enhanced structural analysis procedure and criteria for calculating and evaluating the behaviour of hull structures under dynamic loading approach.  DPS-0, DPS-1, DPS-2 or DPS-3 :  Indicates that a unit is fitted with a system of thrusters, positioning instruments and control systems capable of automatically maintaining the position and heading at sea without external aid within a specified operating envelope under specified maximum environmental conditions.  The assigned numeral (0, 1, 2 or 3) indicates the degree of redundancy. 8
