This document provides a review of statistics concepts including the mean, median, and mode. It begins with definitions of statistics and the mean. It then gives examples of calculating the mean of various data sets by adding all values and dividing by the number of values. The document also provides the formula for finding the mean and examples of calculating the median, which is the middle value of a data set ordered from smallest to largest, and the mode, which is the most frequently occurring value. It concludes by listing important concepts to review for the statistics exam.
6. Definition of Statistics
The practice or science of collecting and analyzing
numerical data in large quantities, especially for the
purpose of inferring proportions in a whole from
those in a representative sample.
7. The Mean
The mean (average) is the most commonly used measure of the
center of the data. It is calculated by adding all values in a data set
and then dividing by the number of values.
Through the process of finding the mean, we even out the set of
numbers.
17. Median & Mode
Median: the middle value in a list ordered from
smallest to largest
The median of {3, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 9, 9, 12} would be 8
Mode: the most frequently occurring value on the list
The mode of {3, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 9, 9, 12} would be 9
18. Finals Review
Important concept to know to make sure you succeed
on the exam!!
1. Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, and Simplification
of Fractions
2. Division of Decimals
3. Prime Factorization
4. Ratio, Unit Rate, Percentages and Proportions (Can you find
them? Can you use them to solve problems?)
5. Logical Reasoning
6. Money
7. Fundamental Counting Principle and Sample Space
8. Distance (Do you remember the formula?)
9. Area, Circumference, Volume and Surface Area
35. Time for handouts!
Take the handouts that you printed out at home and using the
concepts that we learned today, start working on them. If you don’t
finish that’s okay, you can finish it at home.
