2. INTRODUCTION :-
• Cyanobacteria formerly known as BlueGreen Algae.
• It is a Photosynthetic bacteria.
• Cyanobacteria include 2000 species in 150 genera
and 5 orders,with great varieties of shapes and sizes.
• Found in marine sediments and pelagic
zone,freshwater lakes,soils.
• Live in extreme environments-chemically and
temperature.

3. IMPORTANCE:-
1. Cyanobacteria were the first lifeform on Planet that absorb sunlight or water to
produce energy and oxygen with the help of photosynthesis.
2. Since they grow,photosynthesis,multiply and ultimately die,thus adding organic
matter to the soil and increasing its fertility.
3. Growth of cyanobacteria in hard water is most probably responsible for the
deposit of limestones.
4. They are one of very few groups of orgaisms that can convert inert atmospheric
nitrogen into an organic form such as nitrate or ammonia.
5. Oscillatoria and few other cyanobacteria can be used as pollution indicators.
6. ‘’Super Blue green algae ‘’ are basically expenisve pond scum I which
cyanobacterium is a single celled organism which produces its own food
through phoosynthesis. It serves as a ‘’complete whole food ‘’which contains
60% protein with all essential amino acids in perfect balance.
7. They help in the Reclamation of alkaline soil.
8. The cyanobacteria have hetrocysts. These heterosysts are involved in the fixaton
of atmospheric nitrogen.
9. The unicellular cyanobacterium SYNECHOCYSTIS SP . PCC 6803 was the third
prokaryote and first photosynthetic organism whose genome was completeley
sequenced. It continues to be an important model organism.
10. CYANOVIN a secondary metabolite has been shown to posses anti HIV activity.
11. Recent research has suggested the potential application of cyanobacteria to the
generation of renewable energy via converting sunlight into electricity.

• Cyanobacteria are cultured in specific media.
• Cyanobacteria can be helpful in agriculture
As they have the Capability to fix atmospheric nitrogen
to soil.

Spirulina are sold in market due to their nutritive
Value.
Spirulina tablets are sold all over the world as
Health food.

5. Harmful Activites
1. Their most harmful effect is undoubtedly the formation of blooms
in bodies of water.
2. They choke the intake of water supply systems and gave the water a
disagreeable odour giving a fishy taste to drinking water.
3. Cyanobacteria can grown on the walls and roots of buildings
during the rainy seasons causing discolouration,corrision and
leakage.

Cyanobacteria are argubaly the most successful
group of microorganisms on earth.
Due to their ability to release the oxygen during
photosynthesis ,makes it a source of oxygen on
earth.
