7. EARTH
Earth is dynamic planet that we call home. It formed over 4.5 billion
year ago and it has been changing ever since. The only place in the
the universe where we know for certain that life exists.
Earth third planet from the sun and fifth largest planet in the solar
system in terms of size and mass. Its single most outstanding feature
is that its near surface environments are the only places in the
universe known to harbour life.
It is constantly undergoing changes inside and outside.
8. ACTIVITY
PT will ask students to list the names of the things found on the upper
surface of the earth.
10. Just like an onion, the earth is made up of several concentric layers with
one inside another
11.
12. TYPES OF LAYERS
The Earth is divided into three main layers. The dense, hot inner core
,mantle and the thin crust which supports all life in the known universe.
Crust- The uppermost layer over the earth’s surface is called the
crust. It is the thinnest of all the layers. It is about 35 km. on the
continental masses and only 5 km. on the ocean floors. The main
mineral constituents of the continental mass are silica and alumina. It
is thus called sial (si-silica and al-alumina). The oceanic crust mainly
consists of silica and magnesium; it is therefore called sima
13. QUIZ
Continental crust can be up to ______ kilometers thick.
A. 31 km
B. 32km
C. 34 km
D. 35km
14. Mantle- Just beneath the crust is the mantle which extends up to a depth of 2900
km. below the crust. The deepest mine in the world, is in South Africa. It is
about 4 km. deep. In search for oil engineers have dug a hole about 6 km. deep.
To reach to the centre of the earth (which is not possible!) you will have to dig
a hole 6000 km. deep on the ocean floor.
Inner core- The innermost layer is the core with a radius of about 3500 km. It is
mainly made up of nickel and iron and is called nife The central core has very
high temperature and pressure.
15. MATCH THE FOLLOWING
A. crust the I. inner most layer
B. Mantle II. the upper most layer
C. Core III. middle layer

17. RECAPITULATION:
HOMEWORK
Q. Why does only the best life exist on earth out
of all the solar families? Explain it in your own
words.
Q. List any five minerals found under the
surface and also write down its characteristics.
