4. THERMAL POWER PLANT
Energy is not created in any Power Plant. Just the conversion of energy takes
place. The chemical energy of coal is converted into electrical energy in a coal
power plant.
Power Generation Efficiency :- The energy efficiency of a
conventional Thermal Power Station is typically 33% to 48%.
Electricity Cost :- It’s depend on the cost of fuel, capital cost of the
plant, operator labor, maintenance, Ash handling & disposal.
6. DURGAPUR POWER STATION
Unit 1-30 MW 1960 retired.
Unit 2-30 MW-1960-retired.
Unit 3-70 MW-1964 retired 2017.
Unit 4-75 MW-1964 - retired 20171.
Unit 5-75 MW-1966-retired 2017.
Unit 6-110 MW-1987.
Unit 7-300 MW-2008.
Unit 8-250 MW-2014.
7. PROJECT OUTLINE
A Thermal power plant consist of many small and large systems, instruments,
machines. like :-
Coal Handling plant.
Boiler.
Turbine.
Alternator.
Condenser.
Cooling tower And
Ash handling system.
8. COAL HANDLING SYSTEM
The main function of a Coal Handling Plant is crushing of coal that used in Pulverizer or mill and
transfer the pulverize coal to the boiler.
9. BOILER
The Boiler is a rectangular furnace width about and height about. It walls are made of a web of
high pressure tubes about 2.3 inches or 58 mm in diameter. The components of boiler are –
1. Economizer.
2. Water drum.
3. Down comer.
4. Water wall.
5. Water wall plates.
6. Primary super heater.
7. Final super heater.
8. Re-heater.
9. Burner.
10. Ignitor.
11. TURBINE
It is a device that extracts thermal energy from pressurized steam and uses it to do mechanical work
on a rotating output shaft.
The highly stressed components of steam turbine made of high pressure and low pressure castings
with most care.
There are two types of turbines as rotors difference-
1. Impulse Turbine.
2. Reaction Turbine.
And In the thermal power plant three types of turbines are used-
1. HP turbine.(High pressure turbine)
2. LP Turbine.(Low pressure turbine)
3. IP Turbine.(Intermediate pressure turbine)
13. ALTERNATOR
An Alternator is an electric generator that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy in the form
of Alternative current on the principle of Faraday΄s Law. Power station alternators are called Turbo-
alternator. As Indian Standard 50Hz three phase current are produced by the alternators.
14. CONDENSER
It is commonly known as heat exchanger or water-cool shell. The main purpose of the condenser
in thermal power plant is to condense the exhausted steam from a steam turbine to obtain
maximum efficiency and also to convert the turbine exhaust steam into pure water.
15. COOLING TOWER
It is a heat rejection device that rejects heat to the atmosphere. Mainly there are two types of cooling
tower-
1. Natural draft type cooling tower And
2. Induced draft type cooling tower.
16. ASH HANDLING SYSTEM
Ash handling is a method of collection, conveying, interim storage and load out of various types of ash.
The types of ash in thermal power station are- 1.Bottom ash, 2.Bed ash, 3.Fly ash And 4.Ash clinkers.
17. CONCLUSION
We learn and gather knowledge in respect of the matters of the thermal
power plant:
Various methods of management and development were learnt in a
significant way by thermal power plant.
I know about the organization policy plays an important role and the
environment of works in thermal power plant.
