EPIZOOTIC ULCERATIVE
SYNDROME
(EUS)
Presented by : - Amit Waghambar Jadhav
BFSc III rd year
College of Fishery Science
Udgir TQ. Udgir Dist. Latur
Disease :- interruption of the normal structure or function of any part,
organ, or system (or combination thereof) of the body
Epizootic
• Affecting many animals within a given are at the
same time; widely diffused and rapidly spreading
(syn. Epidemic – used for human disease)
Ulcer:-
• excavation of the surface of an organ or
tissue
Syndrome:-
• an assembly of clinical signs which when manifest
together are indicative of a distinct disease or
abnormality (syn. pathognomic/pathognomonic
EUS is an infection
caused by :- an oomycete fungi known as Aphanomyces
invadans or A. piscicida.
EUS is an epizootic condition affecting wild
and farmed freshwater and estuarine finfish.
 first reported in 1971.
Also known by other names such as red
spot disease (RSD), mycotic granulomatosis
(MG), ulcerative mycosis (UM) and in 2005 it
was suggested to rename EUS as epizootic
granulomatous aphanomycosis (EGA)
(Baldock et al., 2005).
Species
Affected
Bottom
dwelling
fishes
air
catfishes
murrels
Cultivable
carps
Causing
large
mortality
hemiramphus
sp.and
mullets
Ulceration in tail
and head regions
and also in
abdominal regions
near fins.
Hemorrhagic spots
where blood ooze out.
Total loss of peduncle
portion and erosion
extended up to
posterior abdominal
cavity.
Abnormal swimming
behaviour – come at
the surface for oxygen
Irratic movements are
found
 Symptoms varies from fish to fish.
 Murrels and air breathing catfishes-ulceration in mostly head and
caudal regions.
 In IMC-haemmorphgic spots spread throughout the body followed
by parasitic and fungal infection
Advanced Stage
splenic white pulp necrosis with
involment of bacteria and fungus in the
host
Cell infiltration
Adverse Stage
focal ulcerative hepatic
cellular degeneration,.
multifocal epithelial
necrosis
Histopathology
Early stage :- Internal organ
shows minimum changes
minute ulceration on body
less no. of hemorrhages bloody spots
Environmental Factors in the occurrence of
EUS
heavy rainfall and flood events, drop in temperature, low
alkalinity andsalinity, acidified run-off water from acid sulphate
soil areas
Control of EUS in natural waters (e.g. rivers) is
impossible.
The following Steps Should be adopted immediately if EUS is
detected
1. Stop the flow of water in culture pond.Until fish are
harvested, avoid any inflow/exchange of water into the pond.
2. Affected fish in the pond should be removed.
3. Calcium Hydroxide should be applied @ 375kg/Ha of water and
fresh water supply can be introduced after 3 weeks.
4. NaCl is applied at 1250-1875 kg/ha a week after the water has
been stopped, this treatment is repeated every 3 weeks interval
until freshwater can be introduced.
6. Lime @ 600kg/Ha in 3 installments with 7 days interval .
7.To avoid excessive accumulation of metabolites, water and
feeding should be reduced.
8. apply CaO @ 1250 kg / Ha – effective in keep in the
microbial population
CIFAX
 Medicine developed by Central Institute of
Freshwater Aquaculture (CIFA)
Preventive as well as curative also
