Mitosis is the process of cell division where a parent cell divides into two daughter cells that are identical to each other and to the original cell. It occurs in somatic cells and allows for organism growth, tissue repair after injury, and replacement of dead cells. The main stages of mitosis are interphase, prophase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase where the chromosomes condense and duplicate, align in the center, separate, and move to opposite sides to form two distinct daughter nuclei.
