Reading in Grade 4

1. Reading Strategies in Grade 4S The structure of each reading session is made up of Teacher read aloud Independent reading Teacher / student Conference Small strategy groups Reflection time

2. Independent Reading This is a time for students to apply the strategies learned in whole group and small group lessons. Students select text based on their reading level and use sticky notes, reading logs to record their reflections. At the end of independent reading, students are asked to share their reflections and how they used their reading goal/s and strategies while reading.

3. Individual Reading GoalsThroughoutthe reading sessions, students will learn and practice and reinforce reading strategies that will support growth in the areas of Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency and Expand Vocabulary. The students set goals for improving in one or two of these areas at a time and with discussion with the teacher. As students meet their goals they will continually be setting new goals to reach.

4. Individual conferencing Conferring with students is a powerful tool for finding out what students are thinking as well as the strategies they are employing.

5. Strategy groups The teacher works with a small group of students who need the same instruction. Each student has their own text and the teacher works with the group to target a specific reading strategy or skill. Students practice these strategies as they work toward their individual goals.

6. Reciprocal Teaching Reciprocal teaching allows students to become the instructors of the content that they are studying. Working in groups of four to seven, the students read a text passage together, following a protocol for predicting, questioning, clarifying, and summarizing—skills that the teacher has modelled over a series of lessons until students are comfortable assuming these assigned roles. These student-directed discussion groups can then monitor their comprehension and reinforce their understanding.
