Teaching Methods/ Strategies and their selection
Criteria of Teaching Methods/ Strategies
Factors that affect Teaching Methods/ Strategies and their selection
2. DIFFERENCE BETWEEN TEACHING STRATEGY AND METHOD
1) Teaching method is based on classical theory of human organization task-centered, whereas teaching strategy
is based on modern theory of organization task and relationship centered.
2) The content and mode of presentation are the main elements of teaching method. The matter determines the
method (telling, showing and doing). The behavioral objectives and learning conditions are two basic elements of
teaching strategy. The objective determines the strategy of (Cognitive, Affective and Psychomotor) teaching.
3) The term strategy has been borrowed from military science (technology) and method is the term of
pedagogy of education.
4) The assumption regarding teaching strategy is that teaching is a science and method assumes that teaching is
an art.
3. 5) Teaching strategy employs micro-approach to teaching, whereas method uses macro-approach to teaching.
6) The strategies are implemented by tactics of teaching and methods are implemented by techniques of teaching.
The tactics are more concerned with learning structures, whereas techniques are concerned with mode of
presentation and nature of content.
7) The effectiveness of teaching strategy is evaluated in terms of achieving objectives by administering criterion
test. The teaching methods are evaluated in terms of mastery over the subject master by using achievement test
8) The main focus of a teaching strategy is to achieve the objective by creating appropriate learning condition.

6) Project Method
7) Activity Method
8) Storytelling
9) Problem Solving Method
10) Illustration Method
11) Drill Method

2) Narration Technique
3) Description Technique
4) Peer Teaching Technique
5) Exposition Technique
6) Integrated Technology
7) Supervised Study Technique
8) Illustration Technique
9) Visualization
7. SELECTION OF METHODS AND MATERIALS
• The very nature of agroforestry demands the acquisition of a wide range of knowledge, skills and
attitudes in learners. If learners are to be empowered, they must be able to organize their own learning,
and not just be empty jars to be filled up.
• When considering the teaching and learning methods and materials to be used, it is important to decide
early on what the trainer will do, and what the learners are expected to do. It is very common to find
trainers standing in front of a blackboard or overhead projector or standing in a field and talking to the
learners.
8. FACTORS TO CONSIDER WHEN SELECTING TEACHING
METHODS
There are four main factors to consider:
1. Objectives set: list all the possible methods which could be used to allow achievement of the objectives.
2. Content: narrow down the list to ensure the content is adequately covered.
3. Learners: consider their needs, capabilities, etc. This will reduce the list further.
4. Resources: this will determine the final selection of methods to be used, since there is no point choosing
methods which cannot be implemented.
