2. DEFINITION
A disease marked by brief sudden attack of chest pain or discomfort caused
deficient oxygenation of heart muscles usually due to impaired blood flow
to the heart.
3. Types of Angina:
o Stable Angina
o Unstable Angina
o Prinzmetal’s Angina (Variant Angina)
4. Stable Angina:
o Called as “Effort Angina”
o Discomfort is precipitated by activity.
o Minimal or no symptoms at rest.
o Symptoms relieved on rest/cessation of activity
5. Unstable angina:
o Also called “Crescendo angina”
o Acute coronary syndrome in which angina worsens
o Occurs at rest
o Severe and acute in onset
o Crescendo pain- pain increases every time
6. Prinzmetal’s Angina:
o Prinzmetal’s angina is a variant form of angina with normal
coronary vessels or minimal atherosclerosis.
o It is caused due to spasm of coronary artery.

11. Symptoms:
o Genitourinary: Decreased Urine Output- indicate Cardiogenic
Shock.
o Gastrointestinal: Nausea & Vomiting.
o Skin: Cool, Clammy, Diaphoretic & Pale in Appearance.
12. Treatment:
o Aims:
• Relief of symptoms
• Slowing progression of the disease
• Reduction of future events like myocardial infarction
13. Drugs:
o For treatment of acute attacks :
• Organic nitrates/nitrites
o For prophylaxix:
• Organic nitrates
• Beta blockers
• Calcium channel blockers
• Ranolazine
• K+ channel opener- Nicorandil
