Rene Descartes was a French philosopher born in 1596 who is considered the founder of Cartesian coordinates, which express the position of points in space as a set of numbers. While watching a fly move around on a ceiling, Descartes realized he could describe its location using distances from the walls of the room, which led him to develop a system of coordinates to describe the position of any point, inventing the Cartesian coordinate system.
