2. The Bbfc stands for the British Board of
Classification. It is responsible for the
classification and the censorship of films
within the UK.

anyone under the age of 12 unless
accompanied by an adult since it usually
contains material which is not suitable for
children.
4. A film rated 12 means the audience may be

allowed. Sexual behaviour, violence and
strong language may be passed. However,
they are not allowed to dwell on detail and
can only be passed briefly.
5. Works rated 15 are not allowed to be
watched, bought or rented by anyone under
that age. Materials usually expected during a
15 rated film are: strong violence; strong

discriminatory use of language and behaviour
and sexual violence including verbal

anything so long it is not illegal or harmful.
The common materials are: very strong
violence and language; strong sexual activity;
sexual violence; strong horror; blood and
gore and discriminatory use of language and
behaviour.
7. In order to find out the certification of our product we searched similar thriller
films. We looked at the age they were rated and also looked at what they
contained, therefore helping us identify our target audience.
Iron Door is rated at 15 and contains very strong language and sex.
Tommy is also rated at 15 and contains similar materials such as strong violence,
torture, sex, strong language and drug use.
Ungli is a film rated at 12A and it contains moderate violence and rude gestures.
Evil Eye is a film rated at 12 and contains the occasional gore and moderate threat.
As for films rated at 18 there is Redirected which contains very strong language
and sexualised nudity.

8. Our sequence seems as though it is a basic thriller. However, it would be a crime
thriller, therefore a sub-genre if carried on. After some research of similar existing
thrillers my partner and I believed that the certification would be rated 15.
This is because of the fact that our film would contain strong language, drug use,
abuse and bloody violence which links to what the existing thriller films rated 15
contain. The strong language would have generally taken place later on in the film in
order to make it realistic and the bloody violence would have been seen through the
murder that would have taken place if the film had carried on. In addition to this, the
drug use could be linked to the fact that the male antagonist is asking the female about
where the money is since he wants to use it to fund his drug problem and the abuse
can be identified during the opening when the male slaps, lifts and drags the female
into the shed.
In order to check if our decision for the target audience was genuine we got feedback
from our teacher and classmates and they all agreed with our decision and believed are
evidences were correct. We also found another example of an existing product which
could link to our film. This product is called the Equalizer . It links to our product since
it is rated 15 and contains strong bloody violence.
9. In order to target our audience we set up a questionnaire
whilst planning our sequence. This helped us to choose
what mise-en-scene and overall themes to choose in order
to target the audience since then we had an overall view as
to what they would have liked to have seen in the film. For
example one of our questions involved choosing the
location. The public had a choice between an isolated or a
busy location and since the main choice was isolated, it
enabled us to choose where to set our film. We also
targeted our audience through feedback during the editing
of our film. It enabled us to pitch and adapt our sequence
to fit the audience’s likings. The fact that our feedback
came from media literate people at ages closest to 15 also
enabled us to target the audience we wanted.
