2. MEDIA LANGUAGE INTRODUCING GENRE
Limitless introduces the thriller genre well as it
creates a mood of anticipation and excitement.
It does this with the fact that the situational type
titles which you first see correspond with the
diegetic sounds in the film.
It also introduces the genre well because of the
fact that it sticks to the conventions of genre
such as the fact that the location is a busy city
and the narrative is from the protagonist’s point
of view.
3. MEDIA LANGUAGE INTRODUCING THEMES
The sound in the Limitless opening sequence is consisted of
diegetic sounds of banging on the door and a non-diegetic sound
of a voiceover. There is also then background music during the
title sequence. The voiceover and diegetic sound make the
audience understand that someone is after the protagonist which
raises the question of “Why is everyone after him?” The
cinematography of the shot showing many dead characters on
the ground and the pan from the protagonist to the man getting
murdered also shows the theme of death and murder and raises
the question “Why is everyone being murdered?”
There is also a theme of suicide which is seen from the birds eye
view shot/ point of view shot. This shows the audience how high
the protagonist is actually standing. It also raises the question of
“Did he jump or did he not?”
4. 1.) Shot of dead people
2.) Shot of man being
murdered
3.) Point of view shot/ Birds eye
view shot
5. MEDIA LANGUAGE INTRODUCING CHARACTERS
The mise-en-scene in the extract signifies to the audience that
the protagonist is wealthy because of the look of the flat which he
is in, as well as the location of the city. The cinematography also
shows how there are many boxes around the flat and that there is
nobody in which raises the question “Is the character moving in or
out?” and “Is anyone in?” His costume also makes him appear as
a wealthy character.
Another media language technique which introduces the
character is the cinematography. Specifically the long shots and
low angles in the scene. Once we have seen the character it
answers the question of “Is anyone in?” The long shots show the
audience that he is standing at the edge of the building which
gives the information that he is about to commit suicide. This also
makes the audience ask questions such as “Why is he wanting to
commit suicide?” The low angles also make the character appear
weak and in no power.
6. 1.) Aerial shot of the flat
2.) Close up of the character’s feet
3.) Long shot of the character
on the edge of the building
4.) Low angle of the protagonist
7. MEDIA LANGUAGE INTRODUCING EVENTS
All the media language techniques of mise-en-scene, editing,
sound and cinematography show the events in Limitless in their
own way.
The mise-en-scene sets the scene with the location and shows
the audience where the character is and what they are like
through the costume.
The sound gives the audience information as to what might be
going on.
The cinematography once again sets the scene with various
shots.
The editing creates anticipation for the audience because of the
fact that it starts of with slow paced editing and goes to faster
paced editing as the scene gradually goes on.
