Sustainability Continuum
Recycling and Waste Reduction Waste handling and disposal typically comprises approximately 10% of a budget Recycling and reuse programs can reduce that cost. You can save money by conducting a waste audit. You can save money by using salvaged or once used materials.

Getting Started with Reducing Waste Walk through your facility and talk to facility personnel to understand how waste is handled Review your waste contract Get a waste audit Implement a recycling and reuse program to divert waste Renegotiate your waste contract Implement measures and track your savings

What is Green or Environmentally Preferable Purchasing? The EPA defines environmentally preferable as… … products or services that have a lesser or reduced effect on human health and the environment when compared with competing products or services that serve the same purpose. This comparison applies to raw materials, manufacturing, packaging, distribution, use, reuse, operation, maintenance, and disposal.
Why is Green Purchasing Important? What comes in must go out - almost everything that ends up in the garbage probably came into the office through purchasing – the connection between purchasing and waste disposal becomes important Certain products actually cost us more than just the initial purchase price- utility costs, maintenance, and end of life disposal What we purchase sends a message to our customers and our suppliers

Opportunities to Save with Green Purchasing Reduce your energy bills by purchasing Energy Star office equipment Reduce your fuel use by choosing energy efficient and hybrid vehicles Reduce your paper (and waste) costs by requiring duplexing Reduce the initial cost of new products by purchasing remanufactured products Reduce the initial cost and waste disposal fees by buying in bulk to reduce packaging
Sustainability Planning Increasingly seen as a requirement for vendors and contractors- sends the right message to your clients Opportunity to consolidate company-wide efforts into one document Increases efficiency and saves money Includes: Policy development Goal Setting 360 degree view of activities Process and results oriented
Sustainability Planning
Getting Started with a Plan Know why you want a plan and what you want to achieve Involve all levels of employers- but message needs to come from the top! Review everything you do to find opportunities and cost savings Be rigorous about documenting your findings and researching alternatives Track your results over time to celebrate your successes and identify where you need more work
Get Certified External communication to stakeholders of sustainability commitment Rigorous Continuous improvement Stamp of approval from a 3 rd party

Editor's Notes

  • #9 75 employees – of which 61 have offices/cubicles, 3 copy machines, 3 break areas. USEPA suggests using 0.75 lbs/person/per day as your paper generation rate. So .75 x 61 = 45.75 lbs of paper per day. Multiply by 5 = 228.75, Multiply by 4.3 = 983.63 lbs per month of paper generated. That’s almost a ½ short ton of paper. Think about how that fills up the container. 1 yd 3 = 165 lbs of mixed paper You could divert 6 yd 3 per month by recycling paper. The same theory applies to cans, bottles, shrink wrap, pallets, wood debris, other packaging (i.e. Styrofoam).
  • #11 In the US, C&I Industry accounts for over 50% of the energy output. This demonstrates the large potential businesses have to contribute to US energy efficiencies.
  • #23 Abby Office Depot consortium: 2,500 green products, currently over 30 tenants participating, trying to increase through flyers and workshops Pru facts: 3. Million GSF 2 towers with shared mechanicals and lobby
  • #24 Abby General background about Mart and LEED process: The Merchandise Mart, at 4.2 million-square-feet is the largest commercial building in the world. In November, 2007 they were awarded LEED-EB silver certification The Delta Institute led the team that took on the very large, two year task of getting the LEED certification. Notes on items in slide: Internal structure: staff teams now assigned to LEED implementation areas, Community outreach : tours and presentations in hot demand, audiences range from local groups to international A lot of the challenges were due to the size/scope of the project Progression: environmental practices  Clean Air Counts  LEED Certification  Sustainability Planning Challenges / Special Issues: mostly stemmed from scale of building. Old toilets  water prerequisite Scale/scope of building, extensive analysis of energy, lighting, IAQ, purchasing, etc. – EnVise to elaborate More Mart facts: 561 tenants 3 million visitors/year 16 trade shows/year 4,000 windows 2,000 toilets 380 miles of wiring 5 miles of corridor 2 city blocks 1 zip code etc
