6. How would you
rate your
knowledge
about your new
partner?
Show 1,2,3, or 4 fingers depending upon how you
self-assess your knowledge.
4 fingers – I know a lot
about them.
3 fingers – I know some
things about them.
2 fingers- I know a little bit
about them.
1 finger – I am just
beginning to know things
about them.

9. What is
Assessment?
assessment is defined as the
process of gathering, recording
and using information about a
learner's response
(performance/achievement) to a
task (Webster’s Dictionary)
So our job as a teacher involves
finding out about…
• the strengths of our students
• what areas they are working on
• and ways to improve or help them with
their learning goals

10. Types of
Assessment
Formal or Informal
Informal assessments are not
data driven but rather content
and performance driven. ...
Formal or standardized
measures should be used
to assess overall achievement,
to compare a student's
performance with others at
their age or grade, or to identify
comparable strengths and
weaknesses with peers.
Formative or Summative
Formative: Given throughout
the learning process, formative
assessments seek to determine
how students are progressing
through a certain learning goal.
Summative:Given at the end of
the year or unit, summative
assessments assess a student's
mastery of a topic after
instruction.

14. Goals of
Assessments
To find out what a
student knows, is able to
do, and/or understands.
This is not the ending,
but rather the beginning
of the learning, teaching
and planning.

Quote
Research
"We need to be activating
students as owners of their own
learning."
In classrooms where medium- and short-
cycle formative assessment was used,
teachers reported greater professional
satisfaction and increased student
engagement in learning. (NCTM 2017)
