2. Location
■ CrimeThrillers are often located in corrupt areas of ordinary cities. Major cities in
America, such as NewYork, are a CrimeThriller favourite in terms of location.
■ Often there are scenes in abandoned factories and warehouses.These old and used
places create a sinister undertone.
These would be good settings for our main task, as they are two completely different
contrasting locations.The populated city option being busy and crowded.While the
abandoned warehouse is almost isolated from the outside world.

3. Characters
■ Villains-Criminals, assassins, thieves
■ Civilian victims
■ Detectives/police officers
The hero usually tries to solve mystery of the villain’s crimes.
However, the main characters (the heroes) generally don’t know that they are danger in
some situations, and this helps to create suspense.
You can also usually tell the type of character due to the costume chosen. Detectives
often wear suits and police officers are uniform.

shows that no one is safe.

5. Sound
■ Diegetic sounds – weapons, doors opening, creaking floorboards, and footsteps.
■ Score- A piece of music usually with varying tempo to match the on-screen action and
tension. Usually the score will have a low pitched drone throughout and later build in
texture with sudden pitched noises to add to the tension.
■ An interesting use of sound is the siren in ‘Kill Bill:Vol. 2’.When the siren begins it
shows that there is going to drama and action to ensue.
■ Sound is an area we need to focus on, as without sound most of the action and
atmosphere on-screen is lost.
