2. For my music magazine I was planning on
doing an R&B, girly style mag with all the
latest artists’ gossip and trends along with
their music, my magazine would be based
around teenage girls (aged 13+).
3. Institutions such as DC Thomson, Dennis Publishing, H Bauer
Publishing and Haymarket Consumer Media have no experience in
music, fashion or gossip magazines and don’t have much experience
with my kind of target audience either and I would therefore I
wouldn’t consider any of these to publish my magazine. Other
publishers have quite a bit of experience in fashion and gossip
magazines such as Conde Nast which publishes ‘Glamour’, ‘Vanity
Fair’ and ‘Vogue’ magazine. And advantage of this publisher is the
experience in fashion magazines and their prints seem to “perform
more robustly than many in the industry predicted” but a big
disadvantage is the lack of music magazine experience again.
4. Egmont magazines specialises in children and teen magazines
which is very good for my target audience as it is quite similar. They
also have a little experience with music magazines, “We Love Pop”
magazine is a pop magazine for young teenage girls which is similar
to my idea and would therefore mean Egmont would have
experience with dealing with my style of magazine. Another
advantage is that Egmont saw a massive sales increase of 21% in the
1st half of 2012, this is said to be partly due to the launch of “We Love
Pop”, and the only problem with this is that they then already have a
successful girly magazine and may not want or need another.
5. Immediate Media Company (IMC) has quite a similar
magazine to “We Love Pop” called “Top Of The Pops”, another girly
music mag. Where Egmont and IMC differ is that Egmont has more
experience with the younger audiences and has had a much greater
sales increase the IMC. However IMC also has a magazine called
“Radio Times” which also includes music, adding to their
experience. Where both publishers fall is the lack of knowledge of
fashion and gossip magazines. IPC Media also has a music magazine
called “NME”, giving it experience in that field but again the lack in
gossip, fashion and beauty, unlike Bauer Consumer Media (BCM).
6. BCM has 4 different music
magazines, “Heat”, “Kerrang”, “Mojo” and “Q”, this is a lot of
experience. This experience continues into fashion, beauty and
gossip with “More!” magazine and “Grazia”. An issue with BCM is
the decrease in magazine sales, this may be due to a lot of their
content now being available online and most declines are coming
from the younger end of the market so BCM was hit hard.
7. In conclusion, I think I would choose either Egmont or BCM to
publish my magazine. Both have experience but I feel BCM has a lot
more and their work spreads across a wide range of media
(websites, music channels etc.) however; BCM has had a massive
sales decrease of 10.7% where Egmont has had an increase of 21%.
They both are almost balanced in their pros and cons and therefore
have not 100% decided which publisher out of the two I would
chose, but I feel more inclined towards Egmont due to the dramatic
sales increase.
