Presented at the 2014 Blackboard Institutional Performance Conference (30-31 October 2014). ABSTRACT: Passing grades and retention through to degree are essential to success in higher education, but these factors are too often mistaken for ends in themselves. A high-performing student environment has provided teachers and researchers at Emory University with a space to think critically about what success means, and about the extent to which data might inform the design of successful learning environments. This presentation will (1) discuss some of the unique challenges encountered by Emory University during its 2013-2014 Blackboard Analytics pilot, (2) describe several provisional insights gained from exploratory data mining, and (3) outline how Emory’s pilot experience has informed support of learning analytics on campus. What we have learned at Emory University has both broad and deep implications for how institutions use data in support of student success, but these insights could only have been achieved in an environment where grade-performance and retention are not significant issues.

This slide show describes a collaborative project between students at Florida A&M University (a historically black university in Tallahassee, Fla.) and Midwestern State University (a predominantly white university in Wichita Falls, Texas) in fall 2008. Students used a wiki, blog, e-mail, social networking sites and a videoconference to create, promote and analyze the results of an online survey (using SurveyMonkey) of college student attitudes toward the 2008 presidential election. The presentation was given in August 2009 at the Association for Education in Journalism & Mass Communication in Boston.

So what, exactly, do students think about research, anyway? EasyBib’s information literacy librarians, Emily Gover and Caity Selleck, wanted to find out. We put a survey out there for our millions of EasyBib users, on topics like Wikipedia, plagiarism, and the technology they need to do their research. We’ve analyzed our 3,000 responses and compared them to what you, the librarian and educator, had to say. And after sorting through some "questionable responses," we found some pretty interesting results! Join us for a discussion of student perceptions of libraries and research and suggestions for what we can do to change them for the better!

Touted for its "Web 2.0" functions, attractive interface, and ease of use for librarians, Libguides has transformed the way many libraries build web-based research guides. Cornell and Princeton Universities decided to collaborate on an assessment initiative to discover how these guides are valued on each campus. In the first part, I will discuss how/why academics use social media and online networks for scholarship, and explore the opportunities and tensions that exist in these spaces. In the second part of the workshop, I will facilitate small group and large group conversations on this topic based on participant interests. Potential topics of exploration may include but are not limited to: social media participation strategies; self-disclosures on social media; capturing and analyzing social media data; ethics of social media research; social media use for networked learning.
