• 604 AD
- The first St. Paul’s is built (wooden)
- Established by King Ethelbert of Kent as
home to bishop of East Saxons, St.
Mellitus.

- First church was destroyed by fire
- Rebuilt by St. Erkenwald (then bishop)

- Second church (wooden) was destroyed
by Vikings during their invasion

- Third St. Paul’s was destroyed by fire (again)
- rebuilt by the Normans

- The Normans wanted to create the longest
and tallest church in the world.
• 1313
- A new Gothic choir was added, making St.
Paul’s third longest church in Europe at 596
feet.
- A spire was completed a year after making it
the tallest church in Europe at 489 feet.

- Old St. Paul’s spire collapses because it was struck by lightning
- It was never rebuilt
- Architect Inigo Jones was called in to resurrect the decaying building, but his efforts
were useless due to the lack of fund.

- Restoration of the Monarchy.
- King Charles II appointed a young architect named Christopher Wren to
undertake major repairs to the building.

- Christopher Wren was just beginning his work on St. Paul’s when the great fire
of London broke and destroyed St. Paul’s once again

- First design rejected (too modern)
- Second design rejected (too

- Sir Christopher Wren dies (91 yrs old)
