The word “research” is derived from the
French word “recherche”, which means
“to go about seeking”, “to search after or
to investigate”.
The term itself being derived from French
term “recerchier” a compound word from
“re” + “cerchier”, or “sercher” meaning
„search‟.
So research is a scientific and systematic
search for pertinent information on a
specific concept or fact.
Definition of Research
 According to Redman & Mory, “Systematic effort to gain
new knowledge”.
 According to Creswell, “Research is a process of steps
used to collect and analyze information to increase our
understanding of a topic or issue”.
 According to John Best, “Research is to be the formal,
systematic, intensive process of carrying on the scientific
method of analysis. It involves a more systematic
structure of investigation, usually resulting in some sort
of formal record of procedures and a report of results or
conclusion”.
Conclusion from Definitions of Research
EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH
 The term Educational Research consists of two
words “education” & “research”. Education means
modification in behavior and research means a
systematic inquiry.
 So, Educational Research is the systematic
attempt to gain better understanding of
educational process, generally with a view to
improve its efficiency.
 According to Mouly, “educational research is
systematic application of scientific method for
solving educational problems”.
Nature of Educational Research
1. It is systematic: It is systematic because it has step by step
process starts from problem formulation, literature review,
hypotheses formulation, research design, data collection,
data analysis & ends at Report-writing.
2. It is scientific: It is scientific because it contains Rules,
Principles, methods, techniques for conducting the
research.
3. It has objectivity: It is carried out on some topic/issue &
has an objective to collect information related for the
same.
4. It has verifiability: Educational research results can be
verified.

5. It has definiteness: Educational research has definiteness as it is
directed towards a direction and on specific topic.
6. It is an art & science both: It is an art because it provides the
researcher necessary skill to collect, analyze & presentation. It
is science because it uses various scientific tools for data
collection & data analysis.
7. It has wider scope: It is used in almost all areas of education
like philosophy, psychology, sociology, technology, educational
planning etc.
8. It is a tool for development of new knowledge: educational
research act as a tool for the development of new knowledge or
method or technique with the generalization of results.

9. It aids in decision making: As educational research
provides result on that basis, it helps educators to adopt
new methods or approaches in educational system.
10. It is qualitative & quantitative both: It collects
quantitative data like scores & qualitative data like
attitude, opinionnaire etc.
11. It relies on empirical evidences: It relies for the results on
the experiment & observation.
