The word “research” is derived from theFrench word “recherche”, which means“to go about seeking”, “to search after orto investigate”.The term itself being derived from Frenchterm “recerchier” a compound word from“re” + “cerchier”, or “sercher” meaning„search‟.So research is a scientific and systematicsearch for pertinent information on aspecific concept or fact.
Definition of Research According to Redman & Mory, “Systematic effort to gainnew knowledge”. According to Creswell, “Research is a process of stepsused to collect and analyze information to increase ourunderstanding of a topic or issue”. According to John Best, “Research is to be the formal,systematic, intensive process of carrying on the scientificmethod of analysis. It involves a more systematicstructure of investigation, usually resulting in some sortof formal record of procedures and a report of results orconclusion”.
EDUCATIONAL RESEARCH The term Educational Research consists of twowords “education” & “research”. Education meansmodification in behavior and research means asystematic inquiry. So, Educational Research is the systematicattempt to gain better understanding ofeducational process, generally with a view toimprove its efficiency. According to Mouly, “educational research issystematic application of scientific method forsolving educational problems”.
Nature of Educational Research1. It is systematic: It is systematic because it has step by stepprocess starts from problem formulation, literature review,hypotheses formulation, research design, data collection,data analysis & ends at Report-writing.2. It is scientific: It is scientific because it contains Rules,Principles, methods, techniques for conducting theresearch.3. It has objectivity: It is carried out on some topic/issue &has an objective to collect information related for thesame.4. It has verifiability: Educational research results can beverified.

It is an art & science both: It is an art because it provides theresearcher necessary skill to collect, analyze & presentation. Itis science because it uses various scientific tools for datacollection & data analysis.7. It has wider scope: It is used in almost all areas of educationlike philosophy, psychology, sociology, technology, educationalplanning etc.8. It is a tool for development of new knowledge: educationalresearch act as a tool for the development of new knowledge ormethod or technique with the generalization of results.
Nature of Educational Research9. It aids in decision making: As educational researchprovides result on that basis, it helps educators to adoptnew methods or approaches in educational system.10. It is qualitative & quantitative both: It collectsquantitative data like scores & qualitative data likeattitude, opinionnaire etc.11. It relies on empirical evidences: It relies for the results onthe experiment & observation.
