We will go over the importance of making a site/brand guideline for a custom Twenty Ten child theme to keep consistency, account for every little detail, and be functionally lovely. Browser-detection has been an important tool for server-side developers for the same task for much longer. Unfortunately, both techniques have certain limitations. Presentation slides from Dustin Tauer's 2014 MIMA Session: What is your Web workflow? If your situation mirrors that of most organizations, the process often begins with some initial planning and discovery, followed by the design phase. In the design phase, Photoshop is opened and wireframes evolve into static designs. Once approved, these designs are passed to the developer which leads to testing, tweaking, and finally, launch. This workflow is great for traditional websites, but major evolution is needed to account for the changing landscape that is responsive design. This session will present different strategies and processes for effectively designing and developing responsive websites. We’ll look at how taking a content-first approach rather than a design-first approach can significantly reduce the number of issues and iterations throughout the process. With mobile traffic quickly surpassing desktop traffic, a new workflow process is imperative to helping us be better prepared for the constantly changing device landscape.

In March 2017, I championed Atomic Design (term coined by developer Brad Frost) at Polaris to help with their efforts creating a pattern library that was reusable, scalable and manageable (their previous attempts had spilled into thousands of patterns which were redundant and hard to manage.) I summed my experience working for pattern library teams for Valspar, US Bank & Target to my research on the latest industry standards, and put them together in this story.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
