Step 2 - My ideas
By Sabrina Pinnu
1)Detail on target audience Who are
they? What other media do they
engage with? (psychographic profile)
The majority of people who has answered were females between the age of
17 and For psychographic profile, most people wanted to see ‘Horror’ and
‘Romance’ however we combined it into a ‘Romantic Thriller’ Genre overall.
Meaning we should target our genre towards teens and young adults. Most
people had chosen that by not having plans on a Saturday night was seen as
the main situation that they would likely experience.
2)Genre of opening scene and
signifiers of this (discovered through
real media research-video of
audiences)
The genre of the opening scene will be a romantic thriller, this is because within a romantic thriller it usually consists of a couple in love or in
marriage, fighting and arguing which then turns into a mystery and ends with a cliff-hanger. However usually within a thriller movie it usually
consists of the protagonist fighting against the antagonist during a chain of bad events.
The questions we asked within our real media research were:
1) Which romantic thriller movies have you recently watched? and did you enjoy watching it? The main romantic thriller that has been recently
watched was ‘Gone girl’ this is because it was directed by David flincher and he cannot go wrong when filming. As well as they have read the
book before the film, as there was still some something new through visual style of the film, the way suspense was built slowly and gradually
though you still feel tense however as the audience you cant help whether you know the ending or not, but the audience feel drawn into a lot
more. This relates to a romantic thriller because there is some sort of twist even though the director makes the film to intense the audience
to make them want to watch more.
2) What do you expect to see in a romantic thriller? Romance, as we should have two leads who have chemistry to pull of the romantic
relationship, however it is not a rom com but we need to be disruptive about how we film and plan it. Or either two people who want to be
together however they cannot be together for various reasons because the situation can lead to something very dangerous. As well as a
darkness within the film to point out tension towards the audience.
3) Within the 4 clips, which one did you prefer and why? The girl with the dragon tattoo as it did not give away too much, very dark and builds
up tension which makes the audience want to watch the film. As well as warm bodies due to the comedy as it broke up the tension. However
side effect as well due to how interesting it is as we do not know what they are talking about therefore it makes it intriguing.
4) Where do you expect to see a Romantic Thriller? Especially in an urban area to create suspense, as well as it is good that we are based within
London as there are a lot of places which are urban.
5) What do you expect to see from the main character? For the main character to not be very dynamic, or who is very predictable we should
make it seem like it builds up a lot of tension to draw the audience in. As well as someone who is a bit of a risk taker. Lastly an underdog, as
everyone sees themselves as one.
3)What are your audience expecting to
see?
We decided within our group that we had chosen a ‘Romantic Thriller’ as our
Genre for our opening sequence. Due to the results, some people did not
mind seeing a particular gender for who the main character would be,
whether it being female or male. Furthermore it had shown that 55% of
people do not mind seeing a stereo-typical or counter-typical character.
Moreover the opening sequence is preferred to be both narrative and
character. It had also shown that the music was ‘mystery-esque’, this was
probably the best for our Romantic Thriller as it was the most popular choice
which was followed by Other music. For our location London was the most
popular choice, this would be perfect our as there is a wide variety of choice
and places that we could film our opening sequence.

Synopsis
What will happen in the opening scene? (What is the story of the film?)
For our final opening sequence idea, we chose to go with a simple yet appealing opening. It starts with an establishing shot of
a house that is in a suburban area, taking place to show a door that is slightly open. However there are different shots that take the audience through a
family house with blood stains on the floor and broken pictures scattered round the scene and an army picture frame attached to the wall. After
Establishing the setting which is a murder scene, it will then show a lady in tears waiting outside for the police to come. We will use a very low
saturated filter to cause a higher sense of mystery and tension for the audience to experience. Although the colours will be bland, we will try to put
emphasis on the colour red to give a strong sense of murder and danger in the scene. A tracking shot will be used to represent this, this is because it
will give the audience a sense of the story however confuse them to why this house is in this state and what could have happened to make it into this
state. However we are giving the audience a taste to what the story could be about. However the overall story is about a wife who kills her young son
after the death of her husband who was at war in Iraq. The loss of her husband caused her to be in depression. She is trying to claim that a man who
she was cheating on her husband with was the murderer. The twist at the end is that the husband is not dead and she gets murdered by the husband
after finding out that the child has been killed. We chose this idea because it links to our genres, conventions and themes. It also has a sense of
mystery within the opening sequence.
