Idiom Design & Consulting India Ltd was set up in March 2005
with the merger of ESIGN & TESSERACT and with investment by
Mr. Kishore Biyani of FUTURE GROUP with the explicit objective
to create sustainable socio-economic impact and to play a significant
development and growth story of an emerging India.
IDIOM, as the name suggests was also a conscious attempt to bring
in ‘design’/‘design thinking’ inspired by the immersive culture that is
India and converge it with the nations modern aspirations to create an
original Indian idiom of design.
In the eight years of its existence since inception Idiom, on various
projects has successfully demonstrated that maximum value and
impact could be realized using minimum resources and time. This
through the deployment of transformational thinking/ strategies a
unique blend of left/ right brain convergence initiative/ deductive
analysis, logical/ strategic creative interventions, and its operational
ability to take fresh ideas from mind to market, concept to consumer
with skill, speed and imagination. To this end, Idiom employs a 100
plus strong and diverse team of talent which include social/ cultural
analysts, strategists, financial/ management experts, technology
experts and most importantly a team of graphic, product, interior
designers, engineers and visualizers with the capability of giving form
and shape to any vision, making IDIOM possibly the only company
in India that not only consults on strategy but has the capability
of prototyping, scaling up and executing proposed strategies in a
creative framework.
What makes Idiom unique, is it’s ability to look at businesses, ideas,
concepts and brands holistically in the context of the Indian culture
and provide design and consulting services all under one roof. One
or more of these disciplines come together in a seamless manner on
most of the projects we have worked on.

- 2. This novel blend of consulting and holistic services has helped Idiom
garner national and international recognition in the form of awards,
mentions in the press and in books published by eminent
personalities. Very recently, DREAM:IN a project incubated at Idiom
was conferred the prestigious ‘GAMECHANGER’ award by the
‘METROPOLIS’, a leading magazine reputed the world over in the
architecture and design field and published out of USA. Similarly both
DREAM:IN and Idiom have been extensively mentioned in a seminal
book on ‘design thinking’ and creativity ‘CREATIVE INTELLIGNCE’
written by Bruce Nussbaum (Bruce Nussbaum is the author of the
Creative Intelligence (HarperBusiness, March 2013). The former
assistant managing editor for Business Week, he is Professor of
Innovation and Design at Parsons The New School of Design and
founder of both the Innovation & Design online channel and IN: Inside
Innovation, a quarterly innovation supplement.
Some of our successful benchmark projects where our capabilities
have been vividly demonstrated include:
1) CONSUMPTION = DEVELOPMENT
We played a key role in designing the brand, business, organization
and retail ecosystem i.e. Future Group today. In the process we
designed their corporate brand, corporate culture, retail brands and
formats, private labels, the identities of constituent companies,
furniture, fixtures & interiors, logos, brands and private labels, visual
merchandising, environmental graphics, facades and signages,
various malls, corporate communication, annual reports, their
corporate offices etc. Yes! What you see of Future Group today
i.e. BIG BAZAAR, PANTALOONS, CENTRAL, HOMETOWN, FOOD
HALL, FOOD BAZAAR, BRAND FACTORY, THEIR VARIOUS MALLS
are likely to have been conceived, physically designed and prototyped
by Idiom Design & Consulting.

- 3. However while designing over 10 million sq.ft of modern retail, which
perhaps no design company in the world would have put on ground in
such a short span of time, we never lost sight of our objective. India’s
GDP could not grow unless more people consumed more… and that
modern retail & India inspired brands could help create significant
new value.
2) EDUCATION = INSPIRATION
Idiom has now been closely associated with the Manipal Education
& Medical Group for over a decade and has played a role in designing
the corporate culture, corporate brand architecture, environmental
graphics & signage in various campuses, in India, Malaysia & Dubai.
In fact, very recently we designed and executed a world class
Anatomy & Pathology Museum in Manipal.
However, what we most cherish about our association with the
Group is how we unearthed, revived and integrated the founder,
Dr. TMA Pai’s inspiration for life and human development… as he
set off on a journey to develop education, healthcare & banking
which most other contemporary visionaries had not touched upon
as that was assumed to be role of the Government.
Today, we continue to work closely with the Group to build and
enhance its global reputation.
3) COME OUT & PLAY
An India inspired, inspiration for sports in India was the brief we gave
ourselves for the 19th Commonwealth Games. Starting with the logo,
spiraling out, inspired by the ‘Ashoka Chakra’, to pictograms inspired
by Sanjhi Art and patterns inspired by Jali’s in Delhi, graced this
Global event the color, vibrancy and diversity of an emerging sporting
nation. All treated in a contemporary fashion so that Delhi wears a
modern look while celebrating the heritage and traditions of India.
Despite the controversies surrounding the games, we would like to
believe that we actively demonstrated that there is more to Indian
sport than cricket. And the athletes, sportswomen & sportsmen did
not let India down.

- 4. 4) AN INCLUSIVE MOVEMENT
When a city decided to get all its civic stakeholders together and
work as one team, we recommended that it could co-opt all citizens,
even the private sector.
Bangalore Forward was hence born as a civic public, private, people
participation movement to truly make Bangalore a world class city.
In its wake followed Swacha Bangalore, Nirmala Bangalore, Swayam
Ghoshne (self assessment of property tax), the Road Signage manual
for the city, Freedom Park, Adopt a Park, Many a flyover, the Outer
Ring Road, and the blueprint for what is now BBMP.
A time when the private sector actually came forward invested time
and money to take Bangalore to the next level.
PRIVATE SECTOR PROJECTS
Besides, Idiom has worked with a host of start-ups, established
businesses in the manufacturing and the services sector in education,
hospitality, healthcare, wellness, retail, financial, IT, ITes.
