elevators, escalators, and moving walks, as well as maintenance and modernization services. The Group
has over 1 000 branch offices in more than 100 countries, as well as production sites and research and
development facilities in the US, Brazil, Europe, China, and India.
What / When / Where
The Schindler Global Award (SGA) ideas competition asks students to put their skills to the test and
participate in the making of livable and sustainable urban environments – with mobility in mind. Mobility
systems move people, goods and ideas over road and rail, sea and air, and through neighborhoods,
regions and the world. Mobility is a catalyst and a conduit for globalization and urbanization – and for the
creation of better lives and neighborhoods.
The Schindler Global Award roots go back to 2003. The Schindler Group established the Schindler Award
in 2003, the European Year of Disabled People, to examine questions about universal mobility and access
in the European context. The competition became very well known and in 2014 /2015 was opened to
students from all over the world.
29. Who / How
The SGA is open to all Bachelor and Master’s Degree students of architecture,
landscape architecture, urban design and planning, from degree-granting educational
institutions worldwide. Participation in the competition gives students a platform for
knowledge sharing, comparison and recognition. Through the use of the open
competition format, common in professional design practice, students have the
opportunity to gain career-oriented skills and contact with internationally renowned
practitioners and experts.
Why
The trends of urban population growth and increasing global interconnectivity
continue. Cities are under pressure to be sustainable high-quality living environments
that offer everyone access to the possibility of a better life. Architects, landscape
architects, urban designers and planners all have a hand in creating fundamentally
important design-based responses to the challenges of the contemporary city.
At Schindler we believe in a shared global responsibility for creating urban
environments – the inspiration for the Schindler Global Award. Engaging the
challenges of the livable and sustainable contemporary city through the SGA is part of
our commitment to fulfilling this responsibility. We believe that the students of today
will help create the cities of tomorrow. Participation in the SGA will help them to
realize their potential and the power of design to address essential urban questions.
