Prepare to Lead Flyer
1. Prepare to Lead, a project of the N.C. Press Foundation, invites North Carolina students in grades K-12 to produce and submit an original
essay or multimedia product (photo/illustration and caption option for K-2 only). Students should obtain permission from anyone they
photograph, interview or film. Selected entrants will have their work showcased and receive prizes!
TOPICS
Grades K-2: Describe a leader you know. What makes the person a good leader? Explain using an illustration or photo and caption, a
few sentences or multimedia presentation.
Grades 3-5: Describe a leader you know. What qualities make this person a good leader? How does he/she show leadership?
Grades 6-8: What makes someone an effective leader? Who demonstrates effective leadership, past or present? How can you demon-
strate effective leadership in your everyday life?
Grades 9-12: Identify one problem you want your community’s, state’s or nation’s leaders to address. Why did you choose that problem?
What solution(s) do you propose?
Who? The N.C. Press Foundation, Newspaper in Education program and local newspapers invite students in grades K-12 to produce and
submit essays and multimedia projects.
What? Prepare to Lead offers four topics to be addressed with photos, illustrations and captions, a multimedia product or a 300-500 word essay.
Why? The 2012 election offers an opportunity for youth in North Carolina and across the nation to learn about leaders and further criti-
cal thinking about leadership and its impact on their future and the future of the country.
When? All entries must be postmarked by June 1, 2012. Selected students will be announced the week of July 4, 2012, meet with a
local leader and receive a $100 cash award. Finalists’ essays and/or multimedia projects will be published in print or online newspapers
and/ or on NIE websites.
How? All students who enter must follow and complete the submission process in full to be eligible for selection. They must mail their
essay or their multimedia product on a disk along with the official consent and waiver form, completed and signed, to the address below.
To qualify, entries must be postmarked no later than June 1, 2012.
