It is imperative all educators become global - but what does this mean and how does it happen? How do we define the global educator? Is it a qualification? Is it a self-declaration? Can it be proven through disposition, curriculum design, workflow, pedagogical approach, use of digital technology, or an ability to adapt and be flexible in learning? Is it all of these? As soon as the word ‘global’ is used we think about ‘global competency’ – are educators ready themselves to prepare students for adopting understandings that are global? The role online technologies play in supporting global educators is a significant factor also as it is through the use of emerging and established online technologies that global educators connect, communicate and collaborate. Keynote Presentation by Julie Lindsay and Katie Grubb for the Global Education Conference 2015. How do learners in and beyond China connect, communicate and collaborate? What tools, strategies and attitudes are needed to support learners across cultures and beyond borders. Through connected and collaborative learning using digital and online technologies, this presentation shares how to grow beyond the walls of the classroom to a world where solutions for positive change become real and include how to: build empathy through virtual connections; identify environmental and other issues; define what problems need to be solved; ideate solutions; share solutions via multimedia and invite feedback. The Connect with China Collaborative caters for diverse learner needs. Links with community organisations and events activates authentic conversations resulting in greater understanding about how we are connected. This type of learning engages with parents and the wider community, builds student success, and creates links to intercultural understanding.

Teachers, parents and administrators, unfamiliar with the tools, might worry that “important” academic time is being lost and wasted as teachers are taking the time to podcast, blog, skype or wiki! It is important to explain that it is not about the latest technology tool. It is about basic literacy skills (reading & writing) It is about curriculum content It is about engaging and motivating students. It is about addressing, integrating and embedding 21st century skills and literacies, such as media, information, network and intercultural literacy.

This allows, or requires, museums to understand the intersection between the needs of those it hopes to serve and the capacity of its own organization to meet them: to provide customized experiences and opportunities to unique audience groups. Educators are one of museums' historically most-valued audiences. Opportunities to have greater impact with teachers, their students, and the learning experiences they create, are great—greater than in the past, when museums focused on adult programming, school visitation, and exhibition-centered lesson plans. These new opportunities lie primarily in the utilization of museum collections and resources within the classroom, where the teacher can make use of them in ways that fit naturally into the learning process they have already developed for their students. To enable this, as we should, museums need to understand this group and how they use digital assets to design and deliver learning experiences. This study looks towards the development of a reusable framework for addressing this need through an understanding of the evolving role of the museum in the education space, the process and knowledge bases required for teachers to be designers of learning resources, and finally the ways that technology itself (in this case, primarily the Web) changes the nature of teaching and learning. The framework proposed is used to develop a survey instrument that is then tested through a case study of an emergent digital platform for teachers, the Smithsonian Learning Lab.

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.
