2. INTRODUCTION
Abraham Harold Maslow was born April 1, 1908 in Brooklyn, New York. He was the
first of seven children born to his parents, who themselves were uneducated Jewish
immigrants from Russia. Maslow wanted to understand what motivates people. He believed
that people possess a set of motivation systems unrelated to rewards or unconscious
desires. Maslow (1943) stated that people are motivated to achieve certain needs. When
one need is fulfilled a person seeks to fulfil the next one, and so on. The rewards and
unconscious desire gives them more motivation to fulfil their needs. The earliest and most
widespread version of Maslow's (1943, 1954) hierarchy of needs includes five motivational
needs, often depicted as hierarchical levels within a pyramid.
This five stage model can be divided into basic needs (e.g. physiological, safety,
love, and esteem) and growth needs (self-actualization). The basic needs are said to
motivate people when they are unmet. Also, the need to fulfil such needs will become
stronger the longer the duration they are denied. For example, the new generation of
workers enter the work force, as a strong arm to management the resistance. Every person
is capable and has the desire to move up the hierarchy toward a level of self-actualization.
Unfortunately, progress is often disrupted by failure to meet lower level needs. Life
experiences including divorce and loss of job may cause an individual to fluctuate between
levels of the hierarchy. Maslow noted only one in a hundred people become fully self-
actualized because our society rewards motivation primarily based on esteem, love and
other social needs.
3. The first level in the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is self-fulfilment needs. Under this
level lies the growth of self-actualization (Maslow, 1962) which states that the need for
personal growth and discovery that is present throughout a person’s life. For Maslow, a
person is always 'becoming' and never remains static in these terms. In self-actualization a
person comes to find a meaning to life that is important to them. 'It refers to the person’s
desire for self-fulfilment, namely, to the tendency for him to become actualized in what he is
potentially.
In this level we can observe that the managers and other workers have from the old
generation had more experience. As his or her work progresses day by day it can be seen
that there is changes as the product of his work improves. Apart from that in the new
generation we can see there is more growth and with the present opportunities they have
been discovering more and contributing to the company with new efficient ideas. As self-
actualization increases then the potentiality of a individual will increase. As potential
increases then the person’s ability to apply new ideas on a field of work will potentially bear
fruit.
The fourth level in the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is safety needs. Under this
category we can see two main elements that are safety and security. This fourth level is very
important stage in a human’s life. As every single person needs to have sufficient safety and
security in order to lead life securely. The term safety and security refers to ‘ out of danger’.
When he or she is has been provided with the basic safety necessities then the individual
would not be afraid and hence proceed with whatever work he or she is involved with.
Examples of security needs include a desire for steady employment, health care, safe
neighbourhoods, and shelter from the environment. Now that the more basic survival needs
have been fulfilled, people begin to feel that they need more control and order to their lives.
A safe place to live, financial security, physical safety, and staying healthy are all concerns
that might come into play at this stage.
4. In this situation where the managers at the plant that have two generation the old and
the new generation need to be secured that their lives is free from harm and danger while at
work. As working in a plant is a job that is seriously dangerous, the company should provide
insentivities for the workers so that they will understand that their lives are being valued and
that they need to work hard, contribute ideas and bring forward the company more. As the
workers safety is assured the people regardless old and the new generation are ready to
work without fear in the company and in won turn out just to merely work to receive a
monthly payment. The company should provide materials that are not harmful when the
workers are handling the machines. Proper vaccine needs to be given, medical check-ups
needs to be conducted regularly to know if the substances handled are harmful or not to the
workers.
The fifth level is physiological needs in the Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. The
elements that fall into this category are food, water, warmth and rest. These include the most
basic needs that are vital to survival, such as the need for water, air, food, and sleep.
Maslow believed that these needs are the most basic and instinctive needs in the hierarchy
because all needs become secondary until these physiological needs are met. Most of these
lower level needs are probably fairly apparent. We need food and water to survive. We also
need to breath and maintain a stable body temperature. In addition to eating, drinking, and
having adequate shelter and clothing.
In order to work efficiently a person needs his basic physiological needs in life. As we
can see the old and new generation need rest, food, water and warmth to continue their
work. For them to work harder and improve the productivity of the company they need to be
healthy at all times meaning they need to get rest, enough food and water and right condition
to work with. For example without enough rest workers tend to feel sleepy and exhausted
working for too long and the results of their work will never be good and productive hence
the quality of the product will decrease leaving a downpour in the company’s economy.
